Hi can anyone please help me I have been trying to install XP Pro edition onto my Pent 111 without any luck. I did a check on what was not compatable and took those items out before I tried to install xp I have also tried to do it on a Formatted HD still it tells me that I have programs or Hardware running that needs to be uninstalled before setup can be done I also stopped the Bios Cahe stuff as well as it suggested but still no luck >
Any help will be gratefully appreciated.

I gather from your post you are trying from a totally clean formatted HD?
If so does the CD let you format the disk to the prefered NTFS, unless you will be dual booting onother OS on another partition?

It sounds like a hardware problem. The motherboard for a pentium 3 should be OK but may need a BIOS update but is less likely, so check whether a more recent BIOS corrects any XP problems.
An incompatible Modem, Soundcard, Video or any other card(s) can cause problems. (even an incompatible Keyboard or Mouse) If you are sure they are all OK remove EVERY card except the Video card and try.
Check obvious things like reseating the memory (you should be using 256Mb+ although 128 will work albeit slower) the processor and all cable connectors.

    pent 3 xp pro

Geez I have had NO probs installing xp ro on ancient box's in the past. Can't imagine the bios cache disble thing with clean intall. How big is the hard drive? Under 8g? If so you can have small clusters that inhibit the install.
Can you set the first boot device=cdrom second boot device=c save/exit, have the winxp in cdrom tray & the install will begin. Here you can delete the partition you created & re-create a partition that XP loves :)

It gets through all the stages up to where it is installing the files then I get the message telling me to uninstall all the things I have that are not compatable with XP and to also disable the bios cacheable I have just tried it again with you instructions on the boot ups and stiil its the very same thing.

CJJT - re: Paul's suggestion of removing all except the video. Did you try that route? If so, is there any way you could get a newer video card to use while you tried another install?

CJJT - this sounds like a good issue to run by M$ support. They can probably help you out with it and it should fit nicely into their "no charge" support category.

    Hi Guys ?
Guess what ?? SUCCESS......... I had so much trouble I formatted again the way you told me to but then after getting all the way almost with the XP install I got a message telling me it could go no further as the driver for the Framebuf needed to be updated.. I called Microsoft they had no idea as to what that was any way I persisted with it again reinstalled Win 98 SE and then put XP Pro in over the top of it doing it as an upgrade and it worked. Thanks to all of you for your help and understanding I would be couriuos to know if any of you know what a framebuf is ?

Video thing - and I've seen a similar problem reported with nVidia & ATI cards.

From the name, I would assume it is a gizzwhichy that does "buffering" for frames - to allow them to be fed in a fashion the card likes.

You are exactly correct that there isn't a lot of information out there.

I did find the following (from an HP Unix article) but even after reading it, I am still pretty much clueless.
