    ActiveX?

I'm a newby so forgive me if I don't get the terminology correct.
About four days ago IE6 would not allow me to get into the upgrade page. I tried FireFox but got the run-around. No ActiveX. Therefore I could not use Symantec or Panda searches to scan my harddrive for the viruses or worms. I have kept my anti-virus program updated as well as SpySweeper and CounterSpy. Even Stinger didn't find anything. Is there another browser that uses ActiveX so I can allow Symantec and/or Panda to scan my hard drive?

    Hello RR36,

Try trouble shooting this issue: http://www.helpwithwindows.com/techfiles/winup-errors.html

Therefore I could not use Symantec or Panda searches to scan my harddrive for the viruses or worms.
Are you saying IE won't work here either?

Is there another browser that uses ActiveX so I can allow Symantec and/or Panda to scan my hard drive?
Aside from the ones that use IE as a shell such as Jim mentioned, not that I know of.

    Regards - Charles

    Ie6

When I go to Symantec or Panda, IE6 will load the home page just fine. However, when I click on "scan," the load bar begins, gets about half way and then another page pops up but there is nothing there except the word "Done." Sometimes it freezes. When I hit CTR + ALT + DEL it shows IE6 is still running, but I have waited for 15 minutes or more and nothing ever happens. As stated, I have kept my virus program up to date. I have scanned for adware. Nothing suspicious shows. I was able to get into the Windows update yesterday, but today, no deal. I just ran S-T-I-N-G-E-R from McAfee and nothing showed up. When I try to go to any Windows page that gives information on what to do, it will not load. I am at my wits end as to what to do. I certainly don't want to start all over again. Any suggestions?

    Ie6

Well, I deleted the history in IE6 and pages, then went to Add or Remove Programs and deleted two of the recent programs I have added. I should have done each one at a time to see which one was the culprit, but now IE6 works and I was able to go to Symantec and Panda to scan my hard drive. Symantec didn't find anything. Panda found 35 files that were infected. It turned out that they were all cookies which neither SpySweeper or CounterSpy caught. Anyway, things are A-OK now. Thanks.
I'll reinstall the two programs one at a time and check after each install to see if that was the program that was affecting IE6. If I find out one of them was, I'll let you know.

Since Active X is a possible problem, as long as you are not fussy about your location on the universe, and have an acceptable Java installed, you can do the Java-based scanning with Housecall .
You will do a virus scanning first, followed by spyware scanning, if desired.
As far as spyware is concerned, I don't believe in any of the programs, and especially I would not pay for them. The best combination is to install Spyware Blaster, a free program .
It will give protection to Mozilla firefox and IE. Additional protection for Netscape and Mozilla is afforded by Spybot S&D. All it finds are cookies, and if you look from the viewpoint of Spyware, it is an infection. Those are tracking cookies, generally of low danger.
And, it is necessary to keep the definitions up to date with Virus and Spyware software. The free Adaware program may do a more thorough job, by fleshing out registry keys, but it may cause a bigger mess.

    Hi Ray,

    Glad things are ok. :)

Yes, please let us know if you find the specific cause.
