For anyone with the same problems, all is working now. Finally, got the program to load up its drivers by disconnecting the modem from the usb port. Then, I looked to see if it was listed in the device manager, (it wasn't) and shut the pc down cold. Waited about 5 minutes, and reloaded the program, which told me the wrong dsl modem was installed (?), let the program uninstall it, shut down, restart and load up again. This time it loaded the correct driver.

    Personally, I think it's a Windows glitch...................

    Thanks again for everyone's help.

Glad to read that you got it working again. Hope it stays that way.

Still think you've done well. Experimenting is the name of the game; you're willing to try stuff and that's what's necessary, IMHO. It's also required to do lots of reading and thinking. Start here (from the horsed mouth), especially the section "How to Troubleshoot After the Installation Procedure ".

Edit: See also http://www.helpwithwindows.com/windows98/ for a list of ideas.

Sorry to say but I feel dumb... Didn't contribute any usefull tidbits but followed the thread. Have had times after setting up a system that I've forgotten to reset the screen to a higher resolution or colors and have gotten failures on installs. It's like the install program looks at the system settings and says to etsself... "Well... This thing aint set up to use me right so I'll just leave and leave everything else messed as I go. ". This isn't the fault of either the basic system or the OS. It's the fault of shoddy install programs.

It's like cable or DSL internet providers telling customers that they can only connect with windows 98 via USB and suffer slower connections when it just isn't true. Windows 98 will handle going DSL or cable just fine through a NIT with higher connection speeds. The 98 system is able... their install software isn't. Add to that the fact that they don't want to sit on the phone telling you how to do it manually and they don't have the knowledge to do it in general through their installers... They just tell you your system can't handle it when it can.

A few months ago I set up a customer with dual boot with win 98 and 2000. Used the win 2000 install to get the proper settings for the NIT and modem and copied the settings to the win 98 install. Went perfect and without a flaw. In fact, to be honest, the win 98 install actually gets slightly higher download speeds.

OK, I'm getting off my soapbox. It just really raises my hackles when a service provider tells you you can't do something just because they are too lazy to tell you how!
