Need Help please system messed up

Well I was browsing some sites and dont know which caused it but when I started my computer the next day my task bar looked different, it was a light gray color and the font for the time is different. Everything in my msconfig startup tab was unchecked and I have no internet connection, when I go to network connections nothing is there. Does anyone have any experience with this. I ran a virus check, adaware and spybot but no help. thanks

Right click on your desktop and bring up "Properties ", adjust your yucky gray back to pretty Luna Blue.

Network connection sounds like another issue entirely. How do you connect to the internet? Have you looked in Device manager for any errors? (Control Panel> System> Hardware> device mgr) My first guess is that you have a hardware problem- modem or NIC or something, since XP isn't "seeing" any connection at all. Need more detail to make a better guesstimate.

its not a color issue, something is effecting my system, the msconfig was all unchecked. I was going to use system restore but there are no restore points in the month of June and it will not let me choose another month.

Could this be a possible corrupted user profile? Sounds like some logon issue and one or more of your services have not been enabled. Can you logon using a different profile such as another poweruser or Administrator? What does your administrator tool "event viewer" offer as a further clue to any problems:

    http://www.wown.com/j_helmig/wxpevent.htm

or from the startbutton>runline>type or copy bolded text eventvwr.msc

While your at it a looksee at your services wouldn't hurt either:
    services.msc.

While looking at msconfig are you using a "Normal" startup on the "general tab" or one of the other startup options such as diagnostic or selective?

    -------------
The above are just some basic trouble shooting techniques when fishing for a more definitive clue or root cause to problem. I just did a curiosity "google" on a couple of your programs listed in the hijackthis.log and Bluetack Blocklist Manager sounds like it has a great potential for opening the window of opportunity for bloopers, gotchas and glitches, especially when you throw in XP sp2. You'll have to wait for a member with some kind of personal knowledge with this program to get any intelligent feedback on it. I know nothing beyond what a peek at the main site offered. I am also "xpsp2 issue challenged" since I have not fully updated to this yet. I thought I'd mention this as some food for thought or as an avenue for further investigation.

I moved this to Removing Spyware & Viruses due to a HJT log being used, and I edited your thread title to something a bit more meaningful.

You do need to use a more recent version of HJT, it shows more and can do more for you.

There is another option available for you. Press F8 when booting, and get the startup menu, there is an option named 'Use last known good configuration'.

I think moving this to the security forum may be just a wee bit premature since the initial problem haven't been clearly pinpointed, defined or eliminated but I guess an online scan and hijackthis run through can't hurt and certainly may help. I'm just not convinced that now is the best time to do this.

I used eventvwr.msc and when I try to access the application, security, or system I get an error that states "unable to complete the operation on "system ", the interface is unknown.

As far as blocklist manager I have been using it for over a year, as far as I know it is harmless. Selective startup on msconfig which also has been that way. Here is the new HJT log. Thanks

If it's easily re-installed, it's certainly worth a shot to uninstall Bluetack Blocklist Manager, reboot and see if anything has changed. If not, continue on, we're gonna have to fish.

Are you able to change your diplay properties, such as background, theme, etc?

Are you using XP Home or Pro?

Please open HijackThis to the misc tools section. Check both boxes next to Generate a startup log, then generate one. Please post the contents.

Are you comfortable in the registry? If so, please export this key and post it's contents.

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\ThemeManager

If not comfortable with it, let me know and we can build a reg file to do so.

Can you access the Windows Firewall and turn it on? Can you access the Task Manager? Security Center?

Have you re-adjusted the services on your computer?

Download GetService.zip (fits on a floppy). Extract it to a new folder on the desktop. Open the folder and double click on the Getservice.bat file to run it. This will create and open a text file named getservice.txt in the same folder. Copy and paste the contents here.

blocklist manager has been uninstalled. I am using xp pro sp2. I am able to change themes and display. Here is the info requested. I noticed there was a program called "epswad4" in msconfig, I disabled it, it is located in the windows directory. I can access the task manager, firewall is off because I have another one, where is the security center? thanks again

I generated my startup list and get service but windowsbbs post states that there are too many characters, more than 20000, to list. How shall I post this.

    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

Have you restored your internet connection yet? Is Network Connections still empty?

well, I went into msconfig and selected normal startup and now everything is working fine. I am still dumb founded because I usually use selective startup all the time. I wonder what could have caused this.

epswa4? Related to epson?? As in your EPSON Stylus Photo R300 Series.

Did you do a search for this epswa*?

    Getservices.txt and board character limitation:
I don't know what the expected or prefered method is but past posts of this nature usually bust the copyNpaste of these longer texts into sections and spread them out through multiple posts unless you have attachment privillages.

    ---------------------------
    Clarify please,
What, out of the problems originally posted,
    are you still suffering from?
