I've been using Real Alternative for close to a year and I think it works very well. It has never crashed in Firefox (Win XP), or not been able to handle a Real media file.

Glad to find someone who uses it! Are you running WMP?
Iuse Irfanview on my spare computer with `98 and it works real well but I`m hesitant about adding it to this XP.
Next time I`m looking for a codec I`ll probably try a Real alternative download. Thanks a lot for the Information, I appreciate it.

    RealPlayer in Startup Programs

I have to disagree. If I disable RealPlayer in msconfig it indeed will not auto start. But if I later start it manually it puts itself back in the auto startup list.

Why use msconfig as anything but the troubleshooter it was designed to be? Just use the provided controls in RealPlayer to have it behave as you desire. Set msconfig to normal startup and the registry will not be fubarred by either your registry cleaner if you run it while msconfig is in this state, or programs that are set to do certain things and can't, so add duplicate registry entries to compensate. Can you spell F-O-R-M-A-T. And it's not the programs's fault. It's the user's.

Using msconfig is what I mean by using 3rd party controls. Of course if you have RealPlayer set to run Message Center to check for things or have RealPlayer set to keep certain file formats, whatever you set in msconfig will be set back to the way you have set RealPlayer to behave as soon as you start RealPlayer. And, there's nothing wrong with that.

If you leave all RealPlayer defaults, it is you who have decided to do so. You then want RealPlayer to open automatically to play all of its supported file formats and you want Message Center to pop up from your Taskbar Notification Center with advertisments and whatever else they have set as default. If you use a 3rd party startup control like msconfig or any other to circumvent the way RealPlayer is set, with your full understanding and agreement, to run, then expect RealPlayer to put back your desired settings set in the player as soon as it opens. It is working properly. You are causing conflicts by using something else to do what is easily provided within RealPlayer. All the commercial and private companies media players will do this, even WindowsMediaPlayer and Foobar2000! RealPlayer just offers more services (Message Center and the like), and more file formats than most players. I don't leave the stuff on, but it's nice that folks who would enjoy being directed to entertaining content have RealPlayers features available. But it's also nice that the software comes built in with the option to set it up however the user wants!
