    I have windows 98 and I'm having a problem with my Norton SystemWorks 2005. Everytime I run a liveupdate I get two errors listed below:

    Symantec Trusted Application List LU1848: Couldn't create callback object.
    Norton AntiVirus Definitions LU9002: Your subscription to Norton AntiVirus is expired. Please renew your subscriptions to download the latest virus definitions.

    It also tells me that my renewal date is 12/30/99 and my virus definitions are 8/11/04. When I reinstall the program the renewal date changes to 2006 but then later changes back to 12/30/99. I have tried the online symantec help but have had no luck. The things I have tried are 1.) How to fix a corrupted subcription, 2.) Direction on how to fix an Error LU1848: Couldn't create callback object, 3.)Directions for subscription renewal date reported as 12/30/99 but skipped section 1 on how to disable firewall and ad blocking software because I did not understand how to do that. Also I had downloaded the SymKBFix3.exe file and ran it but still did not fix the problem. I called the 800 number to talk with symantec support. They had me to run %temp% in the run box and delete everything but 2 things would not delete and had me to reinstall norton systemworks 2005. That failed so they sent me the symclean tools to download to the desktop and run them and reinstall norton again but I got the same error like before. Last time I talked with the technical support with symantec (after about 5 calls) they told me I need to disable firewall if I have any but I didn't know if I have firewall or not or what to look for if I did. I have Spybot-search and destroy and Ad-ware SE Personal. They told me to disable spybot and run liveupdate again. But I did not know how to disable nor did they know how to tell me to disable it. So I uninstalled it and ran liveupdate and stilll got same errors, then installed it back in, ran liveupdate again and come out with same error like before. If you have any suggestions for this problem your help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks,

    The first thing I like to do with a 98 PC that is behaving strangely is a complete clean-up/fix-up. It often cures the problems and even if not, gives a known clean system to start working with to look for a fix. Do the following and try Norton again.

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    General clean-up instructions for Win95/98/ME
    • Open a browser window and dump all TIF (temporary internet files) and cookies. Close.
    • Open windows explorer and
      .. delete the contents of all temp folders
      .. delete any files in c:\ with a name filennnn.chk (where nnnn is any number so file0001.chk, file1034.chk, etc)
    • verify that you have fewer than 500 files & folders directly under c:\. If you are close to that number, remove or move some files.
    • empty the recycle bin
    • boot to DOS
    • from the command prompt do the following
      .. scanreg /fix <ENTER> (press the ENTER key)
      .. scanreg /opt <ENTER>
      ****note that 95 does not have scanreg.exe but a copy from 98 or ME will run fine if you can get one
      .. scandisk c:\ /nosave /autofix /surface <ENTER>
      .. Win /D:M (forces a safe mode windows start)
    • Run another scandisk (start~programs~accessories~system tools) and check for a standard scan and to fix all errors found. The DOS scan couldn't check for long file name issues.
    • Run a defrag
    • Reboot to normal Windows.
    I tried cleaning the computer with the steps you gave me. I found out I had more than 500 files and folders directly under the c: I wasn't even close to 500. I went to start, find, files and folders to see how many I had and it said that "The number of files found exceeds the maximun allowed. Please refine your search ". It found 10,000 files. Alot of files and folders I didn't know what they were to delete them or not, so I deleted the ones I knew what they were but it still saying 10,000 plus files found. I will try to delete some more. I only have c (hard drive), A (floppy), G and H (cd's). When I ran the scan in dos mode the Registry Repair Results said "windows found an error in your system files and was unable to fix the problem. Try deleting some files to free up disk space on your windows drive. If that doesn't work then you will need to install windows to a new directory." Then I typed the scanreg /opt <enter> but I didn't see it do anything so I went to next step. I typed Win /D:M and it responded "You are currently running in MS-Dos mode. Do you want to return to normal mode, to run Window applications again [Enter=Y, Esc=N]?" So I typed Y. After rebooting I had 3 open with dialog boxes on my desktop. They said "Click the program you want to use to open the file "Norton GoBack.Ink.disable" If the program you want is not in the list, click other. Description of 'disable' files: Choose the program you want to use: " The other two dialog boxes were to open Microsoft Office.Ink.disabled and VAIO Action Setup (Server). Ink.disabled." So I just closed the dialog boxes. These dialog boxes haven't came up no more since then. Then I ran the scandisk it did not find any error on the drive. After finishing the cleaning instructions I ran norton again but it gave me same errors I was getting before.
    Norton can be a real bucket of poo sometimes.
    My best suggestion to you is uninstall norton. Remove all traces of it from your computer, and then reinstall it.
    Your problem will most likely be fixed. (its like windows, sometimes reinstall is just easier)
    After you uninstall do a search for any folders called norton or symantec and delete those as well. And you should probabaly remove the registry entrys as well.
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\norton or symantec
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\norton or symantec
    If you dont know how to use the register editor, dont use it.
    Then reinstall, update, and all should be fine.
    Is it possible the NS 2005 is not suitable for Win98 ?
    I myself had problems with ( I think it was ) NS 2003 and 98SE.
    Yes to making sure all Folders for Symantec/Norton are removed before another install attempt. Also do your best to be sure they are gone before even bothering with the Registry.
    A program called REGSEEKER is a great help here. I thought I had a link to it but I don't.
    I AGREEE with not using reg editor if you are not familiar with it.
    Also before you even start cleaning up the Reg, check the C:\windows\sysbckup folder to be sure you have the RB00X.cab files. And know how to do a scanreg /restore if needed.
    I removed all folders called norton and symantec and uninstalled Norton Systemworks 2005. I didn't know how to remove the registry entrys so I left them alone. After doing this I got some errrors on my desktop after rebooting. I was getting errors telling me there was an error starting required files and it listed the file. So I had a friend come over and take a look at my computer. He went into the registry and delete some more of norton. After reinstalling it, it still would not work so he uninstall it and installed a different virus sheild and it would not work either. So he told me that it was nothing wrong with the norton systemworks 2005, that it was something wrong with my computer. So we took everything off the computer and then put everything back on it using system recovery cd and application recovery cd for windows 98. Now everything works on it fine. Thanks for all your help. :)
    NAV 2005 started nothing but problems on my pc. The best thing you can do is get rid of it. It doesn't like Win98! Also, keeps other programs from working correctly. Try AGV instead. It's compatible with Win98 and doesn't take up as much space.
