I'm suddenly having a problem with my DVD/CD drive. It just won't play discs. I'm sure it is a software problem. I put a disc in the drive and the computer just reads the drive as empty.

Does anybody know how to fix this?

What kind of IDE cable do you have for your DVD?
    You must use ATA 66/100!

See this to see what i am talking about:

    Hello thescribe,

Asumming you've made no hardware changes and no change in burning software - go into the device manager and expand cdrom, are there any warning symbols - yellow exclamations - next to the devices?

Right click on the devices and uninstall them, then reboot allowing the OS to re-detect them. See if that fixes it.

    Regards - Charles

Your DVD may be built into the computer, but still has a cable attached to it. You need to open the case to see it.
BTW, have your tried a cleaner for the drive, it could be nothing but a dusty lense.
