a long time ago i came in here and asked "Would my Compaq Preario 5695 compatible with WindowsXP? "

answers were "yes, no, and maybe" and majority said "don't do it "

Well guys I went against your advice :) We purchased WindwsXP professional, and did a CLEAN INSTALL and it was magical. I had no problems installing. I endeded up doing it twice, because I put it initially on my partition D drive (to make srue i didn't ***** the computer up) and it worked great. I then went and cleaned c off, and did a clean install. Windows XP installed fine, and everything has worked great. a few problems though

    1) scanner did not initially work, got some capatible XP drivers, did the trick

    2) logitech "I feel" mouse worked, but the "ifeel" part did not. I got drivers for XP and worked fine

    3) my modem works, but i can tell it has some "problems" with XP. It connects fine to internet, but just has some "glitches" here and there. Sometime it takes like 10 seconds to log off the internet, ect, and more little details.

The rest of the machine is working great. I picked up some extra ram, and this baby is rolling. I have never had XP lock up, (another user on this computer did thoug) and have been satisfied with XP, very much. What a drastic improvement over windows 98 (where i usually got locked up every day)

    Thanks for the help guys!

    Trouble with XP Home Edition

Good for you. My experience is different. In November I bought the Home edition online, ran the diagnostic, and then installed. It looked wonderful, but it knocked out my Microsoft Office 2000, my printer, scanner. camera and - surprise - my cable modem (some were predicted by the diagnostic). I uninstalled, but still had to get my guru to reset the parameters on the modem, and clean my box up generally.

I realize I must download some new drivers for printer (Lexmark Z32) my scanner (HP Scanjet 2100C) Office 2000, and camera (IBM PC camera); but I couldn't get them without my modem.

This is my 3rd computer since 1992, a year old, but I'm still no expert when things don't work. I need help. Where and how do I get the necessary drivers, and how do I install Windows XP safely.

    Thanks, Jim Etherington (78 years)

    You done good.

I upgraded my two at home to XP Pro (both were Gateway systems and one fairly new) and had a strange variety of things that either didn't work at all or worked poorly.

Driver fixes for some things but not all.

I am now the owner of two nice new cases with new motherboards and fast AMD processors and everything is doing fine. "Hardware" issues all went away. Plus, I don't have to look at that *()$&%^@$ logo every time I boot up and when I go into the BIOS settings, there is stuff I can actually set.
