HP 6470z with 98se will slow down to a crawl after two hours idle time. When you go back to it, the mouse is very slow to respond as is everything else. You can shut the computer down and it starts up and works as it should. Any thoughts to keep this old one going. This computer has been a good one. Thanks.

Conrad--You might consider the procedure here.
    http://www.windowsbbs.com/showthread.php?t=37074
You also could see what programs are shown as running after the idle time when you simultaneously click Control+Alt+Delete. Give us the details.
Do you have a lot of programs in Scheduled Tasks as well as other programs which automatically download updates, etc.?
And while I do not think this is the problem, it never hurts to delete your cache (Temporary Internet Files, etc.) and also to run ScanDisk and Defragmenter.
If you need instructions, let us know.

And don't forget to run anti spy/adware software.

    Try these:
Go to Control Panel -> Power Management and change the settings to
    Power Schemes = Always On
    System Standby = Never
Turn off Monitor = After 15 minutes
Turn off hard disks = After 1 Hour

If you use a "non-Windows" screensaver, disable it.

Don't have the screen saver and "Turn off monitor" (or hard disks) set to the same times

Don't use settings under Start -> Settings -> Active Desktop

We have empty internet and temp files, scandisk and defraged computer.
When looking at Control+Alt+delete these are the task running.
    Exployer
    Bcmwltry
    systray
    Stimon
I will see what can be turned off and try it again.
    Thanks

I turned bcmwltry and Stimon of with msconfig and will try and see what will happen. These were the wirless adapter and a scanner.
    Thanks again

Conrad--That is a pretty sparse list of running programs. I am not familiar with Bcmwltry but gather it has to do with Broadcast wireless and therefore legitimate. I would think it doubtful it is causing the problem.
I think you should consider jaylach's suggestion to check for spyware, viruses, etc.
You should have an AntiVirus program running at boot. What you report does not show it. You can run online scans,

though personally I would recommend you buy an antivirus program and use it.
    Spyware detector programs
    AdAware

    Problem went away

The scanner monitor program must have been the problem. I disconnected it in msconfig and the problem went away. The reason no anti virous running was that I removed all programs that I thought may be the problem. Anyway it works fine now and does not slowdown to a crawl when not using any thing. It was not any spy or adware programs that caused the problem. I checked all those from the start and removed the programs. Thanks for all your help.
