    Hardrive (partition) letter:\windows\system32 folder

%System Root% is the root directory where Windows is installed, usually C:\. But may be in another partiton (letter), as in my case with dualboot, and is D:\ (your letter may differ).

NOTE*don't forget to change the attribute to "read only" on the autoexec.nt file.

The same folder you expanded or got the other two files from. It also goes into the *:\windows\system32 folder.

Per the instructions from the link above, if using the cd: (it's in the i386 folder) named command.co_
command line to use to expand it:

    expand CD-ROM Drive Letter:\i386\command.co_ *:\windows\system32\command.com

NOTE: in the above expand line, *:\ replace the * with the drive or partition letter your windows is installed in or adjusted to reflect your path to the \system32 folder located in \windows.

At the risk of making this even more confusing for some, the path to the i386 folder on the cd rom may vary also. Particularly if this is a burned cd. Some users also may have a convenient i386 folder on their harddrive already, as is the case in many OEM versioned systems.

    command.com

I can not locate this folder to copy it in to the system32 folder.

Locate the Command.com file, right-click the expanded Command.com file, and then click Copy.

This is a file. Named command.co_ before it is expanded. You will not find command.com until it is expanded and renamed.

Do you have your folder>view options set to show system and hidden folders file?

Where did you find (get) autoexec.nt and config.nt?

Sorry, I see, I was typing while you were posting. Did you expand and replace or put the all the files needed (autoexec.nt and config.nt and command.com) in the system 32 folder? Are they there? Do a file find and check it out.

It could be that one or more of those files are corrupt. Run the following download and it will replace those files with fresh clean versions:

    16-bit subsystem repair

    Try this:
    http://www2.whidbey.net/djdenham/16bit_fix.htm

It is self expanatory. It's a self executible that will expand and replace all three files concerned for you.

    Ha HA :) ,
Suferdudes a bit faster on the keys!

You aren't running or have updated to xpsp2, have you? There is a similar patch fix that is sp2 specific. I don't know if there's a significant difference but better safe then sorry.

Also, once again, don't forget to make sure your new autoexec.nt's attributes are marked as "read only ".

I should add that sometimes this problem may recur right away. In those cases, it will likely be due to a Trojan infector. If such be your experience, post up a HiJackThis log in the Security forum for expert review.

    Ewwww,
Good, no...excellent point, Suferdude. I got so focused on the confusion and difficulty of the replacement of the files, the possible root cause totally escaped me.

    Yipee!

Don't forget that you just may be infested with a critter. An on-line virus scan should be done to eliminate this as a possibilty. See this:
    http://www.windowsbbs.com/showthread.php?t=43363&highlight=autoexec.nt

-- Will I never learn?--
I should have searched the archives from the beginning of this post. I see "downloadable patch fixes" links from the past now. Maybe I would have beaten Suferdude had I not chosen to use google to find a one and then test it out on my own computer.

Your welcome and thanks for the update. I'm glad this worked out for ya'. :)
