    Hi,

I've finally managed to get my 2 XP Pro machines to connect through a crossover cable - yippee!!

However I cannot get the client PC to run windows update all I get is a 'cannot find server' page with instructions on setting up my connection to auto detect the LAN (I cant do this as it has to be preset for the proxy connection) it also mentions SSL2.0,SSL3.0,TLS1.0 and PCT1.0 (I dont have this one) which are all checked in internet options 'advanced'.

AOL9 opens and runs great on both PC's - its just windows update!

    Any ideas,

    Mick

I'm working on a friend's computer and they don't have a firewall or proxy server. Update will not let me access to get any updates and SP1 was never installed on this computer. Guess he never knew he had to do it. Is there a workaround so I can get SP1 without being directed to WindowsUpdate each time?? Everywhere I've looked at about SP2 says it will install automatically but I can't get anything!!! Thank you

You can download SP 2 from here - this is the full pack with stuff you won't need, but it will upgrade your friend's computer to SP2.

Be aware it is a 270 Mb download - not for dialup connections :)

pomak249--To run Windows Update your setting IE Tools|Internet Options|Security tab| "Run ActiveX controls and plugins" has to be set at Enable or Prompt. An easy way to accomplish that is to put the Update site into your Trusted Sites. (Uncheck the box "Require server verification... ".)
Just saw that the last idea is in the first link Arie provided.
