    Hello alcheme,

Can't help you with this particular problem, however, there is a different, and I think a better way to install MS updates for XP.

When you are in the MS update site, click on MS Catalog Update (on the left side of the Web Page under "see also "). This will take you to a new window where you search for updates for either XP Home or Pro. The Upadates here are downloadable for installation at a later time offline under better circumstances. Save the updates for re-install if ever you have to re-load XP. The updates now can be easily reversed by using System Restore as well.

    Regards - Charles

Thankyou Charles for your good thoughts
My 'See also' offers two options "about Windows Update "
& "Support information ", neither of which seemed to offer a Home or Pro search option. may not be @ the same address?

    Thankyou Kevin
Everything went smoothly on (Q319585) until the final stage of removing the activeX controls.
    When deleting iuengine.dll received warning
"cannot delete file: cannot read from the source file or disk "
the 4 that remain un removed are Norton Protected
    C:\Recycled
    C:|ddnre|recycled
    help : )

I haven't ever used any Norton utilities other than NAV. I'll have to leave that for someone familar with the application.
