I've got a Canon Powershot S50 and I'm trying to map it to a drive. I want to do this in order to have it work with a data recovery program I have. Some files were removed from the camera and I desperately need them back.

Is there any way besides using a CompactFlash USB reader that I can do this?

    Thanks for the help.

I have the software to read the deleted files, but it requires that the camera show up as a drive on the computer. Right now, my camera shows up in the Cameras and Scanners section in Windows XP, not as a mapped drive.

    Any ideas?

You will need to use a card reader - I hitched up my Sureshot S70 and it showed up in Cameras and Scanners as you posted. It also showed up in Windows Explorer as Canon Sureshot S70, but the software which TonyT posted - which I have - just in case :) - does not see it.

However, when the CF card is put in a reader the software sees it as a drive.

I am not aware of a workaround for this.

Incidentally the tranfer of files from the card to the PC is much faster using a card reader - preferably USB 2.

I have never used the camera & scanner wizard so I don't know much about it. I just plugin my camera (usb 2.0) and it shows up with the camera brand icon in My Computer/Windows Explorer and I drag & drop files both directions.

Same here. I've got a Minolta and though I use a card reader instead of the camera (faster) it does show up as a drive in windows explorer when connected. Don't know if they're all supposed to or if it's dependent on how the camera's made. Anybody else know?

    Edit:
Perhaps a driver needs to be installed? It's been so long I can't remember if I had to install one or not. Guess I'll have to take a look at the disk that came with it.

No no, it does show up in Windows Explorer (or My Computer). It's in a separate section called Cameras and Scanner (or something)...there's no wizard involved. It just doesn't show up with a drive designation, however, which is the issue here. The recovery software needs to have an actual drive to scan.

The more I read up on it, the more it seems an external card reader is the only option.

It's actually for someone at work. They deleted files off the camera accidentally before backing them up. This was about two weeks ago. If I have some solid confirmation that I'll be able to get the files back, I'll go ahead and request we get a reader...but we take A LOT of pictures with this camera and have done so since this happened, so I'm wondering how successful we'll be.

IMO - if the same CF card has been used the chances range from nil to nil - the 'lost' image files will have been overwritten many times.

File recovery should be attempted as soon as possible after the event before overwriting takes place - exactly the same as on a hard drive, except in that case the chances of immediate overwriting are marginally better with the far greater storage capacity available.

Yikes...not quite the answer I was hoping for.

She actually moved the files from the camera to a network drive, and deleted them from both locations moments later. I tried shortly thereafter to recover them from the server drive, but with no luck...I just got lots of corrupt, non-recoverable files in regards to what I was looking for.
