    Hi Aggie,

As a beginner, I do not expect you to fend for yourself when you read through these google links. I'm just throwing this link and sublinks at you, so you can read through them and see if something rings a bell. Truth is "housecall" just started on the T.V. and it is one of my favorite shows. I will get back to this post when I am able. In the mean time just have a look-see:
    http://www.google.com/search?num=30&hl=en&lr=lang_en&q=Motive+Directory+kernel32
At this point I am unsure if this is Verison dsl or hp printer or something else ie; "Motive Directory" or "Motivedirectory ". I also noticed one of windowsbbs.com links was listed in the google list. Perhaps we have something useful in our own boards Archives of "Past Posts" and a search here would help.

I only had time for a quick peek at a few of these links. Be back soon....

Motive Directory appears to be from Verizon, some update thing. It appears you can disable it from startup with no ill affects.
Start\Run, type in Msconfig, click on the Startup tab, and uncheck "MotiveSB "

goddezz, I am only get that way for a Cowboys game, and they aren't playing now. Isn't it rerun time for TV land?

    Hi Aggie,
It may be as simple as using msconfig and disabling the startup and please do try that suggestion first but this link looks promising and informative also. It offers a couple of additional steps and information needed if the HP support manager proves to be more difficult or fussy then msconfig/startup removal can handle:

    Hi Markp62,
Yep, it's rerun season alright, but there are always episodes one misses during the regular season. I believe a popular slogan, at one time was, "If you haven't seen it, it's new to you ". Since there is only a handful of shows that I even bother to or enjoy watching, I try not to miss them when I have nothing better to do. Thank you for your input and help in this post. As it turns out, I fell asleep on the couch and still missed half of the show. Guess I'll have to catch the rerun of the rerun. :)

    Hi Goddez1,
Thanks for your help. I downloaded and ran spyware, also checked registry.and sorted some problems there. Things seem to be running ok at the moment. but it's early days and I'm very much a novice. So fingers crossed!
I don't have Hp printer, and am not sure if my dsl is Verison ( how do I identify)? Having read through some of the links you advised has taught me a lot and with the help of websites like this I should be an expert in no time,( well give or take a few years!). I seem now to have a problem with smilies, I can't insert them, when I click on them it just scrolls back to the top of the page! (Here we go again!) Could this be to do with KB891711? seem to recall reading something.
    Best wishes aggie.

    Hello again Aggie,

Boy, this is a slippery little bugger and quite hard to pin down. I did a search on my own Hp which uses an hp keyboard and and an hp printer. I did a file find for "motive ". It came up with "motivedirectory.exe" located in Program Files\Hewlett-Packard\hpis\ folder. Figuring somewhere along the line and with one of these products this mystery came bundled along for the ride. Upon further snooping in the folder where the motivedirectory.exe resides, I discovered this was installed as part of my hp printer. It apparently is part of some sort of convoluted-integrated support and monitoring system that is "built/bundled with" and "ran by" a lot of dependant components. In my case, perhaps part of the hp printer diagnostics that allows its self to keep track of ink levels do alignment checks, paper checks etc. Tried to research it on HP support site but didn't find any relevant help or reference. It can come with printers, cameras, keyboards, isp services, etc.

Web search indicates that it part of some sort of packaged monitoring and support application that manufacturers of various components, services or software uses. Not one particular one but many and varied. Hence the confusion when one is looking to pin this down to one particular "one size fits all" category. It doesn't. If you have a problem with it, you have to play detective on your own computer to try to track this down and figure out which manufacturer/product put it there in the first place. In my case I now know it's my printer. For the less inclined to research a problem with a search engine or experiment with various troubleshooting techniques to eliminate problems with it, should they crop up, I would have had to make email contact with HP or phone call. On-line knowledge base was worthless in this case.

Since you've stated that your problem seems to have cleared up after using spybot, or similar cleaner, perhaps it was a more kernel problem rather than a motivedirectory.exe problem. The spyware/malware critters are known for this among others. Still, you may want to do a similar file find on your own computer to see what clues you can find that lead to motivedirectory.exe, if just for nothing else other than curiosity. While you seem to have taken care of this nuisance for now, it may come back and you may need to know who or what to point the finger at. This will be needed in order to figure out who or what to call/contact or exactly what steps need to taken to fix it. As you have seen the fixes also are slippery and varied and will be based on either experimentation or product support or both.

I could have researched this a bit more and may have eventualy found a more definitive explanation but I'm cross-eyed for now and a bit tired of chasing links and leads. Perhaps I'll look again later. This detective is pooped! :)

Hmmmm, Come to think of it the printer did come bundled with a nusiance thing (considered, I believe, to be spyware info gather/phone homer) called "Hp product survey program ". I have long since stopped this and don't remember the particulars but on reflection I wonder if there is any relation.
