    I need to stop a programs icon from showing in our system tray but still leave the program running in the background.

    Any thoughts,

    Michael

    Michael,

    If you mean the icons by the clock, try this. Right click on an empty space by the clock. Select Properties and Customize in the notification box. Click on the program that you want and change the bahavior in the drop down box. That should take care of it for you.

    Close

    This just hides it but does not get rid of it, they can still access it by looking at hidden icons.

    In this order;
    1. check the preferences in the actual programs, many have options to 'don't show icon in tray'.
    2. most pgms in the system tray are unnecessary anyway. Use msconfig or regedit to remove these pgms from starting at boot period. There is no pgm that loads at boot that cannot be accessed by doubleclicking it's exe file or cpl file in control panel anyway.

    no help

    This does not help If it had an option to take it out in the program itself i would have,

    Are you saying the the regedit for system tray is program specific?

    What's the name of the program? I ask because some pgms, when executed, will always show up in the system tray, such as .CPL applets for video, audio, etc.

    If it's an exe, try going in regedit to:
    hklm\software/microsoft/windows/current version/run and delete the pgm's value in the rt frame, same in hkcu/software......./run

    Then make a shortcut to the pgm and put it in documents & settings/all users/start menu/programs/startup directory and the pgm will run at boot and possibly not display an icon in the tray.
