A few months ago I posted a thread asking for help with a problem where clicking on ANY type of media file (Video or Audio) would freeze up W2k unless I was working from within a video/audio application. That's the ONLY file type it does this on. I believe Newt gave some advice on trying some type of shell utility. I looked at it several times, but couldn't figure out how to use it. I still have the same problem, and very eager to hear any suggestions.

Without knowing specifics I would guess that it may be a problem with file associations...

Go to Window's Explorer and under tools go to folder options. Click the file type tab and check what program media files ate set to. Look for .mpg, .mp3, .wmv, .mov, etc.. If the application linked to any of these files isn't a media player (windows media player, Real player, etc..) change them to one.

I'm stateing this as something to definately look at as you stated:

Since the files work when you call them up from a media player, but freezes when double clicking on em, it just sounds to me like a file association problem to me.

    Didn't work.

    Jaylach,

Thanks for the help. Unfortunately, I'd already checked that, and the files were already properly associated. I wish someone else would at least make the effort you did. I tried Newt's suggestion, but I couldn't figure out how to configure and use that utility.

Wish I could offer more ideas but thats all that really comes to mind...

Wait a sec... Just did a search and came up with this. Did you upgrade to media player 9 before this started happening? If so, here is something I found.

Remember that the download isn't anything re-written. It's just an earlier version of the dll.
