    Running an antique Win98 SE laptop. Having a multitude of problems. Lost driver to external CDRW burner. Tried to reinstall driver and Adaptec CD Creator/Direct CD. Direct CD was trying to open on boot-up - so I opened run/msconfig/start-up and unchecked that and a few others. Not really sure what everything there is - but left what looked to be AVG Free AV related items. Seems that most things lock up after a few minutes - or run slow - or both. Opened a web page and clicked a link - and it locked. Opened Windows Explorer and it locked. Had to close with control/alt/delete "close program" where they were listed as "not responding ". Thought I would run "Ad Aware" and "Spy Bot Search and Destroy ". The Ad Aware program locked about 1/3 of the way through. Everything is slow, locking and even closing program is slow. My AVG Free Edition AV program was not completing the updates successfully - so I deleted and re-installed that. Seem OK. Found no viruses. Ad Aware spotted about 22 critical objects before locking - so I couldn't delete those yet. Any suggestions?

    Curious why you have a Comcast Branded browser and also Juno & Netzero branding?

    Use hijackthis to fix;

    After doing the above, start comp in safe mode and do scans with your antivirus and antispyware pgms.

    I use Comcast cable at home. When visiting - I use Netzero Platinum - and have Juno (free) as a failsafe ISP.
    After I posted here - last night I noticed things were actually worse that I reported. Trying a few things - I went to "Start/Run/msconfig/start-up and couldn’t change settings. Clicked Apply "“ but wouldn’t accept clicking "OKâ€.
    Couldn’t open Windows Explorer "“ it just locks up. Couldn’t save a jpeg to HD using "save-asâ€. Wanted to re-install some items that were deleted in "safe mode" earlier "“ but couldn’t. Was going to install driver for a DVD/CD burner I bought "“ but couldn’t.
    “My Computer" data didn’t display. The "space usage" utility on one of my programs didn’t work. In short, everything related to Windows Explorer, or my files and folders was inoperable.
    All the trouble came on my home cable connection yesterday. Today I am using NetZero dial-up service "“ and everything seems normal. Don’t know if it’s co-insidence or what "“ since I am not home to check there.
    But seems that I had problems even without being connected. I remember deleting some drivers in safe mode that may have been causing problems with a re-installation of Easy CD Creator/Direct CD that stopped working. I downloaded a new upgraded driver "“ but the "new hardware" wizard couldn’t recognize it. Things went screwy and I was going to reinstall a few things from the System Recovery CD "“ but didn’t get a chance. I did run a "repair" of Microsoft IE 6 and tools under "Add/Remove Hardwareâ€.
    So that’s some updated info. I won’t know it the problem is resolved at home till I get back there "“ but not sure what would make a difference there.
    I didn't run the Hijac This fix yet. Here is a new one - since things seem different today.
    Thanks again, Charlie
