    Hi Folks,

I was in a situation where I could not print so I printed to a file which ended up as a file with a .prn extension. Now that I have the printer available how do I print it? Thanks...

    Hi joezep1,
    Give this a try :

Navigate to the folder in which the PRN file has been saved.
Click on "Start | Run" - This opens the "Run" dialog box.
Type the following command and press the "OK" button
    This opens a "DOS" window.
In the DOS window type the following:
    copy (Name of file.prn) /b lpt1
"copy" is a DOS command that sends a copy of a file from one place to another.
"Name of File" is the name you gave your file. (be sure to include ".prn ")
There should be a "space" between the filename and the "/b ", and between the "/b" and "LPT1"
The "/b" tells the computer this is a "binary" file.
"LPT1" is the printer port. You are sending a copy of this file from your computer to the printer.
If your printer is turned on it should print the document as soon as you press the [Enter] key.

Additionally if you open your "printers and faxes" via the startmenu button or the control panel and resize the pane so you can DragAndDrop the *.prn file onto your printer icon. It should print. It's been a while since I've done this but I have done it in the past.

It has been my experience that it is only possible to print .PRN files if your printer has DOS printing capabilities and the files were created on the exact same model of printer.

I can't exclude the possibility that there may be some conversion software available but I seriously doubt it.

I'm glad I looked in on this thread. It caused me to look again as to how to print those pesky .PRN files. In the process, I have stumbled across a nice little freebie that handles the task very well. It bridges the gap from dos printing and allows GUI drag/drop action. It also does the file association which will allow for a direct double-click print on the .PRN file to print it out. This looks like a winner!
