The main objective is to capture music videos from VCR (and TV routed through the VCR). As they are analogue sources, I assume there is no need for a DV capture card.

At the moment I'm using an ATI 64MB DDR VIVO card. Would I gain anything by going for something different, e.g. a specialized capture card, a combined capture/TV card, etc? I've been reading with some interest about a Dazzle Hollywood DV-Bridge device, which eliminates the need for a capture card, but don't know if it is any good. The captured video has to be of a good quality, which I can edit with Premiere, las vegas, etc.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I have the same video card you do and have successfully routed my VCR's picture to my computer and done still image captures. However for some reason the software seems to only allow me to save any moving pictures as MP2s, which are defined as music files and therefore won't play on anything but IrfanView and the ATI File Player. ATI's website says the saving options can be changed to allow you to save as an AVI file, and I did change the compression in the program, but haven't yet tested it.

As for the bridge, I've read bad stuff about it and would stay away.

Interesting thread - not sure I can add much, but will certainly follow. I have one machine setup with an ATI radeon All In Wonder that I have VCR and an old 8mm Olympus Camcorder configured as input and output devices. I just bought Ulead Video Studio software to handle some video editing and direct conversion to CD (has its own VCD & DVD recording engine). This card and the older All In Wonder 128 Pro should handle what you are trying to do. I setup a similar configuration for my father using the 128 Pro, but it was very tough finding drivers that worked well - wound up using some real good beta drivers that preceeded the last official ATI release. That particular chipset has some not too well documented issues with DirectX 7,8 and 8.1.

Please keep posting as to your experience and findings re: what you are trying to do. If I can add anything that may be relevent, I will.

    Thanks.
    ;)
