    hello,
i was trying the recovery console and was unable to change to some directories. i read that you had to lift restictions using the security console. i have XP Home edition and i'll be damned if i can find the security console snapin using mmc.exe. Is there no snapin w/Home edition? Is there a work around. I hate to think if i kludge XP and need RC to go to a specific directory I cant w/Home version. Any answers welcome...

eroica - by default the recovery console is restricted in the folders/directories it allows you access to. From This article
You should be able to use the Set command to change the AllowAllPaths to TRUE so you can see the whole drive and if you wish, the AllowRemovableMedia to TRUE if you want to copy to floppy or something.

If you don't want to have to mess with using SET each time, I seem to remember an article that gave some registry changes that would set your system to default to TRUE for both of those. You should be able to search up the article (not a Microsoft one).

XP-home does not support some of the snap-ins that work fine on XP-pro.

I tried to cd \i386 for one. I figured that and \ would be two of the more critical directories Imight need in emergency. it let me into \ ok but not \i386. I have no idea what other restricted directories there are. You know it will be one I need to get into a year from now when some program mucks up my installation. also i tried the set AllowAllPaths command at the prompt and it would not allow it, referring me to XP and setting the Security Console. If this is the case this is one glaring problem w/the RC under XP Home. Anyone else run across this problem and find some kinda hack...

Merge this reg file, reboot and you should be in business to set the enviroment variables.

thanx i just went into regedit and changed dword value from 0 to 1. So now if i run set commands i should be set. no pun intended. u think in all the literature they would make mention of this difference w/Home. Thanx for the heads up. i was really scratching my head looking for the Security console. i'm just sorry i didnt get Profesional. everything i read said there was very little difference between them. Wrong!!

    Thanks for that Dave.

Alan - the recovery console restrictions are the same with Pro as with Home by default. But you are correct in that there are useful things that the home version simply won't permit.
