I can't seem to get my email. I'm getting the message below:

The connection to the server has failed. Account: 'xxxxxx.gmail.com', Server: 'pop.gmail.com', Protocol: POP3, Port: 995, Secure(SSL): Yes, Socket Error: 10060, Error Number: 0x800CCC0E

I just had my cable hooked up after a move but it worked fine in the morning and by afternoon I'm getting this. I also use grouper and that will not connect to the internet but I can use browsers just fine.

Please let me know if I should post this in a different forum.

    Thanks.

    This forum is fine.

Since your browser works, the gmail failure is strange unless a setting shook loose somewhere. Do you have another POP email account you can set up to test that part? If not yours, maybe a friends account?

The fact that you use a P2P app (grouper) raises some alarms and especially since I gather from reading that gmail using SSL is very sensitive to spyware. Do you use any spyware blockers and spyware killers?

I may have just fixed it. But I'm not sure. I know just enough to be dangerous. I set my computer to be in the dmz. And I just tried outlook express and my emails have come pouring in. And grouper seems to be connected too. I've uses the dmz settings in the past when trying to use other programs but haven't had to mess with it in a long time.

My problem seems to have gone away but any information or theories about why the dmz had to be set before it worked this time would be appreciated!

    Thanks!

    Hmmmm

DMZ indicates that you are behind a router running NAT (network address translation) or a firewall providing the same protection. By putting your PC in the DMZ, you are effectively removing the protection and that isn't usually the best option.

If you say specifically what setup you are using, it should be possible to give you settings that will allow the traffic in so you have working mail & grouper without leaving your PC quite so open to attack.
