i have just bought a external caddy and maxtor 120 gb drive only when i plug it in, win xp home dont pick it up as extra drive?
have had a look at hard drive and taken off jumper to make it ds/slave, but still no luck
the supplied driver cd has a folder for mac or win98 presumably because win xp should auto detect.
have run add hardware wizard and it says usb mass storage device - this device is working properly.

my toshiba laptop is usb 1.1 but i dont see any problem there as usb 1.1 and 2 are backward compatible arent they? also leaflet in caddy says 1.1 and 2

    any ideas

You are correct that 98 needs a driver CD and XP does not. You are also correct about the USB compatibility. Using a hard drive on USB 1.1 is certainly possible, but it won't be any fun. You might consider getting a PCMCIA USB2 adapter.

Cable Select will only work if you have that kind of cable. Are your cable connectors labeled Master and Slave? If not, you are most likely using a traditional IDE cable, and that means you need to jumper the drive as Master.

Western Digital has separate Master/No Slave (Single) and Master/With Slave jumper settings. I don't believe Maxtor does that, but check your manual to be sure.

You might need to do something with the drive administrator, but I don't use XP so I can't really speak to that.
