    Hi,
I have XP Home w/ SP2 and current Windows updates as of couple weeks ago.

I have Mozilla 1.7.3 and I am having trouble with Junk Mail Control function. I only have one email account.
I go to Tools | Junk Mail Controls but when I select, e.g., Move Incoming message to Junk Folder, I am unable to click on "Ok ". Only Cancel and Help work.

I read RDOC2 Q&A but I don't seem to get to first base. I deleted the Junk Folder (don't know how it got there), Deleted all filters.

I sent a test email and marked it Junk with the Junk Button and did a Run Junk Control on folder. It blinked a few times in the bottom right of the Mozilla screen but the email marked Junk stayed in the Inbox.

    I must be missing something?

    Thanks,
    Ken

    Ken,

Your Version of Mozilla is obsolete, and has serious Security issues. I would suggest that you update to Version 1.7.8. Your Profile will remain intact with the uninstall.

The Junk filter is created the first time you mark a message as "Junk ". Once you close Mozilla and reopen, then the Junk folder appears. It's usually best to not delete default folders.

You really don't need filters with the Bayesian Junk Mail Filter. Just mark messages as they come in, as either Junk or Not Junk. I only use filters if I want to file newsletters in their own folder, etc.

If the first Junk mail doesn't move the first time you run the Junk Mail on the Inbox, then close your browser and reopen.

    Mozilla Junk Mail Controls

    Hi,
I uninstalled Mozilla 1.7.3 and installed 1.7.8 - went well.

So now to test Junk Mail:
    1. Tried to do Junk Mail Control.
Had the same result as with 1.7.3, e.g., Selected Move incoming mail to Junk folder...
I could not click on Ok, could click on Cancel to exit. I tried the other radio buttons to click on or off and could not click Ok.

    2. Sent email from a little used yahoo id that I have.
    3. I clicked on Junk icon to mark it as Junk
    4. Went to Tools, Run Junk Mail on folder. Again the msg area at the bottom right side of Mozilla flashed a few times like it was processing.
I did this twice. Junk Mail folder was not created.
    5. Closed Mozilla and opened again
    6. My email still there in Inbox - marked as Junk
    7. Did step #4 again but no result.

    I have J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 2.

I must be missing something. What do you suggest?

    Thanks,
    Ken

I remember having problems with a mail account, a while ago. And, I corrected the problem only when I removed the account, and placed it again.
You first e-mail implies that you had marked a message Junk, so the Folder should have been created. Did I understand correctly that you have marked one message Junk, and it did not move, although you had it set to go to the Junk folder. You are not going to see any action if the address of the sent e-mail is in the folder which is selected, usually the Personal folder.

    Ken,

Westside's suggestion to remove the Mail Account and then recreate is what I would do also.

I mark the Mail as junk with a right click: Mark | As Junk, or As Not Junk

    Hi,
    No luck...
    1. I removed my account
    2. Recreated my same account (I only have one). At first I was concerned that I wouldn't get back to my account folders because they did not show up when I recreated it. But I closed Mozilla and openned Mozilla and presto, there they were (I don't usually do this). I am sure that is normal.
    3. Junk Mail Control is still a problem as I have said several times in my previous replies, e.g., can't click Ok, only Cancel or Help when I click on radio buttons to Move to Junk folder.
    4. I removed Junk mail icon on my Yahoo msg that was still in Inbox. Then right mouse click & msg to Mark it Junk. Then Run Junk Mail Control but did not move the msg, did not create Junk folder.

It seems to me that the problem is that I cannot click on Ok in Junk Mail Control screen when:
    1) I have made no changes to the Junk Mail Control screen OR
    2) When I have made changes to the either or both of the radio buttons for Moving msg to Junk filter.
See attached file, Mozilla 1-7-8 Junk Mail Control screen, as it appears when I open it initially OR when I have made changes in #2) above but could not click Ok and had to Close or Cancel Junk Mail Control Screen.

Looking forward to getting this to work,
    Thank you,
    Ken

Your .zip file shows that you have started, but not completed the set up.
Look at that screen shot, and see if you think that it would work. I would not, because you have not checked where the Junk should be delivered to. It is grayed out, but it is not enough. Place a check mark next to Junk on that account, I select to remain one day before being automatically deleted, but you can give yourself more time.
Finally, you can decide what to do if you have to delete e-mails manually.
I have to do it with 90% of the messages, but it is not so surprising since my ISP uses a similar method of marking Junk mail.
So, if you have done what you showed, please, complete the settings, because the controls cannot read your mind what you want to do with the mail marked junk.
As for the way you removed and recreated the account, it does not sound correct. You should have only mail on server in the newly created account. You can get the entire Inbox from the old account, if you wish. But this is an entirely different story.

    Hi,
I will just use the words rather than give the file since that was confusing. I will bold the problem areas and the questions.

It seems to me that one problem is that I cannot click on Ok in Junk Mail Control screen when:
    1. I have clicked on either or both of the 3rd & 4th radio buttons in the Junk Mail Control for Moving msg to Junk filter.

    OR
    2. I have made no changes to the Junk Mail Control screen

So the question is how do I get the Junk Mail Control to accept my changes since I cannot click on the OK button - just Cancel Button or Help Button can be clicked on?

So when I recreated my Account, I used the same Account name as before since I had already deleted the Account. Why should I create a new Account with a different name when I am still going to use the mail folders (inbox plus many others) on my PC?

If I have to create a brand new Account, how do I establish a connection from this new Account to all my folders (inbox, etc.) on my PC?

    Thanks,
    Ken

    Ken,

Is this how your Junk Mail Controls window looks before you try to click the OK button: Junk Mail Controls

You have selected ALL the appropriate settings, but the OK button is grayed out? Have you tried pressing Enter instead, as that will suffice for the OK key.

Are you using a Theme other than the default? If so revert to the default Theme. If you are using extensions, try uninstalling one by one, and see if that makes a difference. If all else fails, then create a new Profile, as it is obvious that something in your Profile is amiss.

You are correct in your assumption that Mozilla must be closed and then reopened when making changes in your Preferences. On closing, the changes are then written to the prefs.js file, and on reopening the changes you made are in effect.

If recreate a new account, it does not matter what name you give, since your program will give it the same name as whatever you entered for incoming mail. The net effect is to start with a clean slate. And, you can rename the old Inbox, and Sent files, copy them, and then paste them in the newly created folder. To answer to: Why should I create a new Account with a different name when I am still going to use the mail folders (inbox plus many others) on my PC? , I can't find this. You will have to give a new name to a Profile, but not for to account.
But let's get things straight (i.e. how does your set up compares with Ramona's)

    Hi,
    Working much better :)

I created a new profile, copied my mail folders from old profile and pasted into new profile. I did not realize how important a profile can be and that it can get corrupted - maybe in the conversion from Netscape 4.7 some time ago or some other corruption.

So now I can specify Junk Mail Control and click on Ok (Ramona, Enter did not work on old profile). I can set up Junk Mail Control with the same radio buttons as shown in Ramona's Junk Mail Control picture.
Thank you for your help and patiently getting me to this point! :)

I have a couple of questions on Junk Mail Control:
    1. I can see how to quickly click on Junk mail by using the Junk Mail icon that I have displayed as Junk Status on the inbox header. Is there a one click method to specify Not Junk Mail? I know you can do a Right Click | Mark | Not Junk Mail.

    2. Is the best way to train Mozilla by marking each msg as either Junk or Not Junk? Any other techniques?

    Thanks,
    Ken

    Ken,

No one click method for "Not Junk ".

The best method is to continue marking as Junk/Not Junk, and soon your Junk Mail Controls will be able to do this without guidance. Watch for mistakes in the early stage, and correct them. Also patience is required, and it takes a couple of weeks to train the Junk Mail Controls.

    Ken,
my two cents on this. First cent: you must toggle off the Junk icon, or mark Not Junk, any e-mail which a very solicitous Junk control sent to the Junk mail folder, and then right click and move back to Inbox. You must remove the Junk marking first.
Second cent: I have noticed that whoever sends Spam is, purposelly sending e-mails with incorrectly spelled Subject. No two of them are the same, so I find myself marking almost each mail which I don't like. The bulk of the Spam is taken care by my ISP controls, about 10% slip through, and the Mozilla controls are not any better than my ISP's. So, I anything which is marked manually goes directly to Trash. However, if you don't have Spam Controls from your ISP, you will see a very busy Junk folder in a couple of days.
