2 OS on same drive 1 good-1 bad

    :confused: Hello all,
    I upgraded from 98 to XP Home. XP Home corrupted when I downloaded SP2. I could not access XP home in order to uninstall SP2 (not knowledgeable enough). I tried to reinstall XP Home and ended up with 2 OS (1 good 1 bad).
    How do I remove the bad OS? The hard drive is cramped with both, I keep getting the "low disk space" message. Any help is appreciated.

    At this point is best to format the drive (erase all data) and relod xp from scratch. Upgrading the operating system is always a less reliable way to install, always best to do a clean install from scratch.

    It will likely be trouble free. Do be sure to download SP2 and install it from the hard drive rather than over the internet (unless you have it on CD).

    Since you upgraded from 98 and the 2nd OS has you cramped for space I'm assuming your hardware isn't real new. If you do have problems they will most likely be hardware related.

    But at this point and with the problems you've had, I 100% agree with Tony that your best option is to format and install to a completely clean system.

    You didn't mention how much RAM you have. XP requires an absolute minimum of 128 megs to barely limp along. It actually runs marginally well on 256 megs. It will run much better on 512 megs, which most folks have. If you are a power user, it will need a full gig.

    Thanks to all for the info. Machine has small hard drive 10 gig. I did upgrade the ram to 512 mg before I started all this. I give it a shot and let y'all know.

    If you lived closer to me I'd say just bring the box to my place!
    As for the fresh install:
    1. be sure to backup your email data, wanted files, etc to cdr or dvdr.
    2. use Internet Explorer File menu\Export to export your bookmarks which can be imported using same method when new install done.
    3. write down any needed settings such as email servers, etc.

    Boot from the xp cd and delete existing partitions, then create a new partition using all available space and format it using ntfs and install xp.
