I have a Toshiba Satellite 1800 / S204 laptop computer that came with Windows XP Professional. It has the Intel Celeron 1.0 GHz CPU...(C1000, 13, 256, 20, DVD, M/L) <--This is what's on the label on the back of the computer-I don't know what the 13 or the M/L stands for.

I don't want to USE OR LEARN XP! My wife bought this computer for her business, out of town, and can't return it. We have 2 desktop computers at home we use for business that have WINDOWS 98se! We don't have the time or desire to learn a new operating system, much less deal with all the hassles and inherant problems I read about trying to integrate XP with 98.

We need to network my 2 desktops and have the laptop be able to share files with those computers.

Here is what I want to do. I just want to buy Windows 98se and install it on the laptop. I would prefer to just start from scratch. Reformat the HD and put Windows 98 on as the OS.

Is there anything I need to be wary of or concerned about in doing this? What are the steps I need to go thru?

    Thanks

Those laptops/notebooks are very propryatory(spell?). M/L prolly multilingo. Caution: could have a bios overlay on hard drive limiting your standerd format. You can boot to win98se disket & try to remove/delete partition, then reboot to disket again fdisk then create new primary partition. Now you must reboot again to set the new fat32 partition tables, now at the prompt type format c: [enter]:)

Before you make your decision...did you know that Microsoft is stopping support for some of it's OS's?

You might want to go to this micrsoft site before make your final decision on trying to buy win98se.

I was a die hard win2k user and was not going to upgrade to winxp but I started using it at work and liked it so much I bought a licence and installed it on my PC. I've been running it now for quite awhile without any problems. I also bought a good winxp book for any info I needed.

    Laters,

Bite the bullet and upgrade. You can get the wrong impression about things when you pay too much attention to the BB problems being posted. Sometimes the problem is setting in the seat in front of the monitor.

If you don't feel comfortable upgrading your old systems, get some pro to do it and step them all up to XP. Then never look back.

Always drink upstream from the herd.

    Good luck.

If you just had the one PC, I might think backing it off to a familiar OS was the way to go. Although if you read the articles about M$ dropping support for older stuff, even with a single it might not be such a great idea.

If it had ME loaded, I would agree that switching to almost anything else was a wonderful idea (cause I really didn't like ME).

Since you have several networked systems, I strongly agree with the posters above who suggest keeping XP and maybe even updating your other systems - although you can easily get by for now without doing that. XP Pro rather than XP Home if you have a choice.

There are only a couple of issues you will probably have networking XP to the 98 systems and they are well covered in articles on here. Check the networking section or this section (a search should turn up all you will need).

I am pushing 60 years of age and have used every M$ OS since some version of DOS. I am now using XP Pro at work and at home (2 PC network there with printer router/switch, and ADSL) and have to say it is my pick of the OS litter for use these days with the internet and networks.

And in case you are worried about some older apps running, the compatibility mode thing in XP is excellent.
