As a test, go to Start > Run > and type logoff (press enter).

Sounds like your system has gotten seriously confused.

From start=>run, key in sfc /scannow (note the space after sfc) and click OK. You will probably be asked for your XP CD so have it handy. Lets see if the system file checker can replace whatever damaged or missing system files are causing the problem.

I ran the Sfc, it came up with 'windows file protection' and said it was checking all windows file were intact and in their original versions. Once it had finished the scan it closed it self with no request for the Xp CD or anything.
    thanks, Liam

pughy123--Some program (quite possibly a third party program) may be hanging at shutdown. Is there any item in the Notification Area (formerly Systems Tray) which looks suspicious? Try Control+Alt+Delete|Processes tab to see what may still be running. Close each suspicious[/v] program sequentially and see if you can then shut down.
Are you getting any error messages?
Here is supposedly a fix, but I cannot understand it
