I picked up a virus somewhere and now my Internet won't come up.
Any way I can fix this, or is it a repair man job? Thank you for your help,
    Erar66.

    Erar66--
Normally the best advice would be to follow the procedure here
    http://www.windowsbbs.com/showthread.php?t=37074
But if you do not have these programs yet and cannot access the internet, you have a problem. Do you have a friend who can download those programs for you and burn them to a CD for you to use? The friend should also download the latest updated reference files and virus definitions.
However, how do you know you have a virus? Perhaps the problem is something else. Are you getting any error messages?
It is fairly easy to repair IE in Win98. One way is Start|Programs|Accessories|System Tools|System Information|Tools tab|Repair Internet Explorer.
Or perhaps restoring your PC to a point before the problem started. Start|Run|type scanreg /restore|OK|pick a date before the problem started|Wait|Reboot.
EDIT--Zander beat me to it, as usual. However, if you have a virus and have not yet removed it, I suspect LSPFix is not going to help much since the virus will soon re-infect you. And you will still have the problem of downloading.

    After trying the lsp fix.....
which I hope will be "at least part of your answer ", but "in preparation for" and "curiousity about" your current status and how you came to this conclusion....

What was the virus? How do you it was a virus? What are the specific details of the IE problem you are having, in particular, a description of what your doing and any "quoted" errors you get when you do it.

What virus program are you running? Did it attempt to do a cleanup? If so, did this cleanup envolve system files?

    :) :) :) To Jim,
To funny! One of these days I going to beat you to the post/update button!!!

I have a Screen Message that says Trojan Spyware is on my computer.
My PC worked online for a few days. IE worked but it was very, very slow.
Then I bought a Spyware Program and I ran the Virus Scanner on my PC, but
now all I can run is Safe Mode. No internet access at all now. I hope this will
help you help me. I'll be back tomorrow. Thanks for your help, Erar66.

    Oh noooo,
Ad popup proclaiming your computer is infested with spyware is classic tactic used by unreputable spyware programs. They often do the opposite of what they proclaim or will do both but the main goal is baggaged bundled spyware/malware. While this does not mean all programs advertised by such a popup is bad the odds are not in your favor if you did indeed take one up on it's offer and followed one of these popups to purchase your software. See this stickie found pinned to the "General Security Forum" and pay close attention to the section entitled "use antivirus software" and other links pertaining to rouge or bad software and vendors:
    http://www.windowsbbs.com/showthread.php?t=31535

What program did you purchase? If you ran a scan and an improper cleanup or to much cleaning up was done this type of problem can happen. Perhaps this scanner has an undo or had made a backup that can restored. Generally these programs have a function or option to restore your system to the way it was before the cleanup. I will hold judgement until I know what program you used, and possibly the version. Some older version (nonupdated) did and do have bugs in them that removes things it should not. Did you try the lsp fix as earlier suggested?

Review Jim's thread in this post. While I didn't follow the sublink he included. I'm sure there's information in there you need to read also. You may still be able to recover from IE's disfunction long enough to get to get net access and do as the "Welcome Stickie" in the "Removing Spyware and Virus Forum" instructions. See here:
