I've had to repair my WinXP install but now it can't find the network domain to allow me to log on. Even 'Safe Mode' requires a logon and it won't accept the passwords, including the Administratrors. Is there anyway to even get into winXP to check the network settings?

Have you tried just pressing enter without typing any password at all? Generally that will work if no password has been set for the Administrator, which is the default mode.

Tried that unfortunately. I don’t know if it’s picking up a password from WinXP because it can’t see the network. But I would have thought the windows password would have been the same as the network one??

Not necessarily. Is the PC a member of the domain? Is networking even getting properly started?

Yes it was a member, but I can't check on the PC if it still is as I can't log in. It's still setup in my 'active directory users and computers'

    The warning is

the system could not log you. make sure your user name and password are correct. They are as far as me typing them in and the "aduc "

Idoes say that the network drivers are being loaded but I can't get into the OS to check.

dishon - it is possible that you just need to select the domain and will be able to log on then.

You have to be running XP-pro for domain membership so if you are somehow seeing the 'friendly' logon screen with icons, press Ctrl-Alt-Del a couple of times to get the classic logon box displayed then take a look at the pictures to see what you may need to change.

The pictures are from a 2K server but XP-pro has the same screen.

Sorry you had to go through all of that. I've seen systems lose track of the domain(s) or local PC name and the "domain" line vanish. Unless you know to click Options, it can be a nightmare.

The 'Options' only showed or hid the 'Shutdown' button. I could remote access the pc which for some reason I've been able to do on others that had the same problem. I suspect that the corrupted files that XP needed to repair in the first place must be network related so I was doomed from the start.
