Any new recommendations for VoIP software. Initially it would be PC to PC but if was good quality I would look at moving to calling out to 'normal' phones and vice versa. Everyone is talking about Skype. Is it really that good?

I use Skype very happily, but only the SkypeOut feature (my PC to someone else's regular phone). (None of the people I normally call use Skype.) The sound quality is excellent and I have had very few dialling problems. Cost is just over 2 cents per minute including all the international calls I make. Skype to Skype is totally free, though I have heard your PC becomes involved with a SETI-like network when you do that. (Not confirmed.) I presume this happens only when you are using Skype to Skype. You, of course, can turn Skype off when not in use.
I believe Skype now has a way for those with phones to dial into my PC, but since I still have a phone, I have not looked into that.
I do not think Skype has the ability to dial 911, so it probably is not a replacement for a full-fledged phone.

If you are looking for a replacement phone then check out www.vonage.co.uk, and you can use your existing phone plugged into a broadband router.
