I have a HP Deskjet 5550 printer. It supports parallel (bidirectional required to access all features) and USB. I have it connected to a SMC print server with a unidirectional parallel port (though the only LAN solution with HP's blessings is a HP Jetdirect).

Would it be possible to add a Bluetooth adapter to the printer so I won't have to print through the LAN? And if so, my print drivers won't understand BT so how would I be able to use the printer (I'd guess a virtual parallel port?)?

I can't directly answer your question but I also have a HP 5550 that is connected via USB. What features are not supported with USB? I haven't noticed any.

I think this is a two device requirement ...

    For your computer .....
D-Link PersonalAirTM DBT-120 , now your computer can broadcast Bluetooth.

    For your printer ...
Combo Bluetooth Print Adapter , now your pinter can receive the Bluetooth broadcast.

I'm sure their are many equipment providers, these are just suggestions to get you going.

You're missing nothing. You only miss something when using a unidirectional parallel port connection. And since that is what I use, I miss out on things like checking the ink levels and other features that require the computer listen to the printer. Converting to Bluetooth would solve this problem for me as an added benefit.

Another benefit is if I want to add a photo printer or (more likely) a b/w laser printer, Bluetooth would let me do it. Most of the wired and WiFi print server boxes (like a Netgear PS121) support only a single printer, just like my current SMC router does. But adding another printer should never be a problem for a BT setup.
