I was on the internet at the time and I got this message:
Your current security settings prohibit running ActiveX controls on this page.
Where do I go to get check ActiveX setup? I assume this is within IE. If not, where?
I am using Win98 and IE. I was on the internet at the time.
    Thanks
    Claire

    Hi Claire,

The ActiveX settings are at: IE Tools (top tool bar) > Internet options > Security tab > Custom settings. The first group of settings are various activeX settings with options from disabling - prompting - enabling. The group that should be outright disabled is obvious.

If you have a site that you trust, then put it into the Trusted Zone. Anything questionable, you can prompt for and see the effects with both not allowing and allowing. A great many times what a site wants to do is either not noticable of irrelevant.

Allowing ActiveX is how a great deal of malware gets on the system. It potentially allows a site carte blanche on your system.

I went to the IE Tools and checked out the ActiveX section and got nowhere. I still get the same message. I tried setting it to enabling. REbooted and got the same message. Then I tried Administrator approved and got the same message.
What can I set that will allow ActiveX to work? I am trying to run TREND which uses ActiveX as well as Panda and neither let me get to the point of using their software. Both give me the same message as I stated earlier, I click o.k. and try to go on. Then I get the message that there is an error in downloading.

    Hi Claire,

Ok, read thru this article by Arie on safe surfing: http://www.helpwithwindows.com/WindowsXP/ie-sp2-surf-safe.html

In it you'll see a reference to a MS tool that allows you to add sites to the trusted zone thru the IE's tool context menu, click on tools and see add to trusted and add to restricted. You can either do this temporarily or on a permenent basis.

If it doesn't work either because your not running IE6 or because this is Win 98, than you can do this manually by adding the site to the trusted zone youself.

    Regards - Charles
