The local policy of this system does not permit you to logon interactively

    I got a windows XP pro SP2 from my customer.

    He lost his user name on the logon screen. The system require him to logon as administrator. But he did not know the password of administrator.

    So I tried to figure it out by cover the password with the tool of Passware. What I did is using original XP setup CD boot up, press F6 key and so on, finally the password is changed to 12345.

    Then I reboot the system, and got this kinda message

    " The local policy of this system does not permit you to logon interactively "

    And I tried google it, and tried Microsoft KB something. But they always says this problem relate to logon to Domain of Win2003/2000. It is very weird, this computer is a standlone system using in his home.

    Can anybody help me? Thanks in advance.

    The message means what it says. There is a policy setting (Local Security Policy) that is restricting logon locally.

    Look for Local Policies > User Rights Assignments > Deny Logon Locally.

    Of course, you need to get logged on to do this. Try Safe Mode.

    Safe Mode doesn't work yet, and all of the F8 things don't work.

    And I tried use Ntrights.exe from remote compouter


    I got "ntrights error openpolicy 1073741790 "

    If nothing else will work for you (and it sounds like nothing else is going to work), you may have to use a utility like NT Recover to pull the user's data files off the drive then format and reinstall.

    Sorry everyone. I don't have any experience about case to share.

    The only thing I can do is reinstall the system because my customer expect it urgent.

    I think a clean reinstall is probably your best option.

    Did you take a look at the NTRecover utility from www.sysinternals.com to see if it will allow you to copy the user's personal files to another location before you do the reinstall?

    Thanks a lot.
    The machine has gone with my customer, I will try NTRecover next time when I meet the similar issue.

    I used Ghost to clone the whole hard drive. and attached it to the new system. All stuff there fortunately.

    That is good news.

    If you do much work with other people's PCs, you should probably get a copy of NTRecover and play with it. It can be a life-saver at times.
