I have a new Dell Inspiron 6000 with several USB ports but no serial ports, and I have a HP DeskJet 720C printer with serial port. I purchased a USB to Printer Bridge Cable from Zonet, however XP is not recognizing it, it just says "unknown device ", when I check in the USB Controller in Device Manager.

Also, when I check "Printers and Faxes" and check "Ports" for that printer, it does not give me an option for USBs.

How can I get the information to communicated from my computer to my printer?

Are you sure it's a serial port? It should be a Parallel port on the printer.

If I'm not mistaken the 720 is at least five years old and was made before USB was popular.

If you can't find a converter you might look for a docking station that would have more ports...Course it'd be cheaper to buy a new printer.

My mistake on the nomenclature, yes it is a parallel port...

Well, as far as expense goes, the cable was $10, and I don't think I can convince my company to buy me a new printer to sit on my desk when I am already hooked up to the network printer (eventhough it is located downstairs).

The documentation that came with the cable seemed straight forward, however it was missing key information...
