I keep getting error in winxp home ed. when Im reading my hotmail and click on the site most of the time it tells me it can't desplay page. So I went to google and search for a fix. And I got this fix (Netsh winsock reset ) so I run it and then I find this messege on the search that I on did my firewall and some programs like Norton antivirus is there anyway I can undo this without reinstalling everything? thank you
    message I go of search

    netsh winsock reset

the netsh winsock reset commands should only be run as last resort. this is not a free run command as it does harm some apps. When you run this command it resets the winsock settings to any third party firewalls or privacy programs such as Norton Internet Security Suite or McAfee Security Center.

When these apps are installed they put what are called class items in the winsock stack. Its what allows the firewalls and privacy apps to do their jobs. when you run "netsh winsock reset" it blows away all class items installed by these apps and the ONLY way for the class items to get put back is to reinstall them. So make sure if you use a third party firewall or privacy service that you have or can get the install files to reinstall it before running that command.

You won't get any errors from the apps but they will not do what they are made to do. ie firewalls say they are blocking but they really aren't because the class items are gone that allowed them to do it.

Also the extra commands will work on any edition of Windows XP as long has you have SP2 installed. You don't need to be in safe mode to do it but you will need to reboot.

    Hello Bob,

One way to undo is to go back to a restore point prior to this if you have one. The problem with a fix is that you're never go to be quite sure that it really reversed the damage.

If I were you I would I reinstall though.

    Regards - Charle
