Not all devices are running

Hi there, I turn on my computer and the only thing that seems to turn on is the fans over the cpu. The other drives and motherboard dont seem to be turning on themselves although the lights that let me know the computer power is on and the light that tells me the hard drive is being read is also on but that one is on all the time. On the Monitor the screen continues to be blank there is no BIOS that that comes up on the screen when I start up the computer. Nor do the Cd-Rom or DVD-Rom drives eject when I hit the eject button. Does this mean that some of the wires in my Power Supply Unit may be damaged and that I need to get a new one? Or is there another problem here? I made sure that all the cables in the back of the computer are connected properly and none of the wires within the tower has been tampered with.

 

First step would be to open it up and pull and reseat everything. Drive cables, Drive power plugs, cards, even the power supply connection to the mobo. Even reseat your memory. Reseat everything except the CPU. Leave that alone for now.

While you have the power connector to the mobo disconnected pull out the little battery for about a minute. This will in effect reset your bios.

Now try booting. If nothing, I would look at the power supply and mobo. If you have more than one memory stick you could try with only one at a time. If one works and another dosen't that tells you that a stick is bad.

If the harddrive light stays on, reseat the connectors as Jay said, also reseat the cable at the motherboard. If it does the same then disconnect the harddrive cables and try starting without it. If it starts up without the HD then that is the problem. It probably will not work again (although it could a dud ribbon/data cable), but you could see what happens by running it in another computer as slave.
Edit: then again, it may not may be getting enough power to run the harddrive.

PS You say only the CPU fan is running. Check that the Power Supply Unit fan is running.
