I have developed a problem with my PC since I opened an Email attachment called "text.bat" thinking it was a reply for my sons lost password. Since then I cannot use Norton 2000 (no uninstall, install, Liveupdate or scan) I tried RNAV.exe, and it cleared out the old registers and undeleted Norton, but it cannot be reinstalled. I have searched high and low for answers. The error I get is S32NAVN.dll is missing?? Please point me in the right direction.. There is more I have tried, but space permitting.....

    Thanks, Rassy

There is at least one virus running around which pretty much disables some (a lot of, actually) AV's. You can read Symantec's synopsis and get the "fix" tool for the one I found on 4 friends' PCs in the last two weeks (KLEZ) Here. It's quite a read, but worth the time. It might be a pretty lengthy fix... it was for me.

There is an accompanying virus called Elkern. You can read about Symantec's analysis on it here.

The fix tool will get 'em both, as I understand it (I used AVG, but it appears Norton's version will do it too).

There are other possibilities, of course. You can check out Symantec's list of viruses, definitions, and fixes here.

    Hope this helps you.

Have you been keeping your NAV diffinitions up to date ?

I myself make it a DAILY routine to check.

Also was NAV set to check your e-mail ? If it was it should have caught that BEFORE it got into the Inbox. Unless it is brand new one that they do not have deff for yet.

Also There is a program call MailWasher which can be used to check the mail on the server BEFORE downloading it. It has found a couple of possible infected items and I was able to delete then right off the server. It also found 2-3 possible infections in my Wife's e-mail the other day.

Anti-Virus checking is at point of must have and set to its fullest capabilities. No more shortcutting allowed.

    LOST NORTON UPDATE

As always, you led me to the problem, which was the W32.Klez and W32.Elkern infections. I am running NAV 2000, but it was not scanning all emails. It will be now, but unfortunately all I get is the POPEXAM.DLL file is linked to missing export MFC42.DLL:6467 error message. I tried renaming the MFC42.DLL and reloading NAV..........to no avail. The only thing I did not do was to reinstall NAV without the Scan email feature. This is the only difference there was before the virus. What is the POPEXAM.DLL do? Am I right in assuming this error is the reason I cannot log on to my email server? As far as I know, the virus is cleaned out, but this last little annoyance has me baffled.

    TIA, Rassy

Thanks again for the advice. What I ended up doing was exactly what was suggested. I already copied MFC42.DLL:6467 into the POPEXAM.DLL folder and everything cleared up. Getting the virus out is just 1/2 the battle, the rest is all clean up............ugh. Now back to the holiday festivities. :D
