Please help. I am using Win98SE. My PCI Multimedia Device has been disabled by a windows driver. How do I find out which one?

    Reinstall your sound card drivers.

I tried to reinstall my sound card drivers, but I seem to be having a problem. My computer is an e-machines 466is and I am running win98SE. The system info lists CMI8738/C3DXPCI Audio. The PCI Multimedia Device turns up as unknown, so I don't know what is the correct driver to install, nothing I try has worked. I also see something listed that says CS4280-CM ASAVXG9945 PCI card. I am confused. Please help.

Try this. Select the PCI Multimedia Device, then in Drivers tab, click on Install Driver, and let it search the folder where you have the sound card drivers. Windows can determine if those are the correct drivers.
There is another possibility for this, and this would be if your modem is a PCI card. Check for "Wave Device for Voice Modem ", it would be listed under 'Sound, Video and Game Controllers. If it is not there, this could be the PCI Multimedia Device, and you would need to reinstall the modem drivers.

    Or this method.
Go to Start\Run and type in Msconfig and press Enter. Then click on the Advanced tab, and put a check for Enable Startup Menu. Then reboot, and select Safe Mode.
Then go into the Device Manager, and remove all sound card entries including duplicates, remove PCI Multimedia Devices, both of any duplicate entries. Do not remove any Audio/Video Codecs. Reboot the computer.
When you get the Startup Menu this time, choose Command Prompt Only, when you see "C:\Windows> (or C:\>) appear on the screen, do these two commands. The first appears to do nothing.
    scanreg /opt
    scanreg /fix

When you get the message "windows has repaired the registry ", reboot, and this time select Normal mode. Windows will redetect what was removed and reinstall them.
