Outlook Express is my main mail system I use, but recently downloaded thunderbird to see how it worked in comparison. Only problem, is I cannot get thunderbird to work for me. When I try to send a "test letter" I get an error box, asking me for my password for my outlook express account, and the only password I have is my log on account name. When I try this, it keeps giving me the same message, asking me for my password. I even tried making thunderbird the default browser for a bit, but to no avail. Anybody have any ideas?
    thanks,

    coadman,

    Some settings to check:
    Mozilla Thunderbird Knowledge Base:

    * Use name and password: Check this box if your e-mail service provider supports or requires SMTP authentication. If you receive error messages when trying to send, try unchecking this box. Also, your username (if needed) might be your full e-mail address (e.g., "johndoe@domain.com ") or only the part before the "@" ( "johndoe "), depending on your service provider; check with them which is correct.

    * Use secure connection: Unless your service provider supports SSL connections for outgoing mail, select "No ".

    * Port: Some service providers use non-standard ports (25 is standard). If you're having problems, ask them which ports they support for SMTP or outgoing e-mail.

    * (For help with multiple servers, see Advanced tips, below.)

Also, click "Tools -> Account Settings -> [account name] Server Settings -> Advanced -> SMTP" and verify the correct SMTP server is selected there. If you see "Relay access denied" or "Relaying denied" errors, be sure to verify this setting.

If none of the above help, post back...

I looked and sure enough the "user name & password" box was checked, so I unchecked it, and was able to send an email to a yahoo account I have. But, I sent my brother an email, using thunderbird, and when he replied it went to outlook express and not thunderbird, even though I had thunderbird check as my primary mail. Now, I didn't reboot, after I made thunderbird my default email, so should I have? If not, why wouldnt his return email go to TB, instead of OE?
    thanks,

What do you mean by "return mail "? Like a confirmation? Whatever you set up in OE is not set up thre same way in TB. And, you must have checked in both mail client to leave messages on server. If you don't, it is first come, first and only serve. But, if you checked to leave messages on server any mail client should download the messsages.
So, it makes no difference if you set any mail client your default, if the mail is no longer on server. The mail effect of having a mail client default, is to open mail at a website. In general, this works, and Microsoft respect the hierarchy, but some websites are set up to have mail sent only from a Microsoft mail client, and the same is true with browser. But, this is a website choice.

You have certainly gotten me confused  .. When my brother sent me an email, replying to the one I had sent him earlier from TB, I did not receive it in TB, I received his email in OE. I didnt check anything in a "mail client ", care to explain more?
    thanks,

The term Mail Client refers to the mail program, such as Thunderbird or Outlook Express. Now, TB, in Options|Accounts|your account|Server settings you should have a check marks, next to leave on Server.
In OE, it is a bit different, except that you click on the Advanced tab, and select to leave a copy on server.
Did you check first in TB? If you did, you should have seen the meassage there, and not in OE, if you are not set up as I said before.
If you don't get e-mail in TB, I suggest that you review all settings, or, at least clicked on Get Mail.
I have OE, two different TB, two Netscape7.2, and Mozilla1.7.8, and if one of my accounts is set up, I get the mail in all six.
