    Hi All,

I don't use Mozilla very often, but how in the world do you go about installing security updates?

I cannnot find a link to have my browser scanned for updates. (Like Internet Explorer does).

    Thanks

    James Martin,

Seamonkey (Mozilla) doesn't have security patches. When there is a security vulnerability to be addressed, then a new Version is released. The turn around on security vulnerabilities is excellent! If you are running Version 1.7.7 then you have the most current update. There are more current versions in the nightly releases, but I don't recommend them, unless you want to be on the cutting edge. These versions are more for testing the beta's before the final release.

    Hi Ramona,

I have version 1.0.1 (FireFox)......I forgot to tell you that I only use FireFox.

So a person has to uninstall the old version and install the new?

Does the server send out automatic update notices too?

FF1.0.3 is the latest version, and, it is based on the same engine as Moz1.7.7.
As for updates, there is a setting in Tools|Options|Advanced|Software updates. You should have it checked off, but I don't know what it would do, but you can check now, anytime. As for the old version, it is important to disable any extention. I installed 1.0.3 on top of 1.0.2, but I ran into trouble because of the extentions.

You may need to update again if you're running Firefox 1.0.3. Mozilla Firefox 1.0.4 is now out.

I heard about a new security threat recently......Is this the fix for it?

Wonder why Mozilla doesn't have an update center like MS does?

Looks like it would be easier for everyone if they issued patches instead of reinstalls.

Just my opinion on the matter.

    James,

Here is a list of security vulnerability issues addressed in the Mozilla Browsers:
    http://www.mozilla.org/projects/security/known-vulnerabilities.html

How often have you downloaded a Windows Security Patch only to find that it has broken something else in Windows? Mozilla issues a complete release with first testing to assure that nothing else is broken in the browser. This is to assure that nothing in the Mozilla code is vulnerable to a security vulnerability.

I just discovered today that in the upper right-hand corner of the Firefox, to the left of the circle of dots, another icon will appear when there is an update (and you have "check for updates" enabled in Tools>Options>Genera).

When it appears, click on it and it will proceed to download (and install if you want it to) Firefox updates.

I'd tell you what the icon looks like but it disappears after updating and I can't remember now what it was.

    Miz,

But when you use auto-update, didn't you find that the patch was, infact, a 4.+ MB download, and not a "patch" per se? I can think of only one true "patch" that Firefox has issued, and even that was replaced with a full Release.

I believe that the small icon you missed, at least in the default theme, is a small arrow pointing up. However, that's as automatic as "autoupdate" gets. You still have to have to either click the popup, or the update icon before an update starts. You must also have "Allow websites to install software" enabled in Web Features.

BTW, if you want a better look at evasive icons and popups, you might try setting these two settings in about:config to higher values:

    alerts.slideIncrementTime
    alerts.totalOpenTime
