Hi...I bought a HP printer for my mom. I started installing the software and the PC (windows ME), locked up, so I hit the reset button.

When I got back to the desktop, I tried to install again, but shortly after installation begins, I get the error message... "Program C:\Windows\System\MSIEXEC.exe" and "Abnormal Program Termination ".

I tried to find the program in "ADD\Remove ", but it's not there.

    What can I do?

Hopefully it will be as simple as using system restore and rolling back to a point in time before you started the printer install. Here's how Microsoft says to do that.

    - Click the Start button.
    - Point to Programs, point to Accessories, point to System Tools, and then click System Restore.
    - Choose Restore my computer to an earlier time, and then click Next.
    - Click a day on the calendar, click the restore point description, and then click Next.
    - Make sure you have closed all your files and open programs, and then click OK to close the dialog box.
    - Click Next.

Your system will revert to its previous settings, your time will return to its usual dimensions, and you can go full speed ahead.

    Hmmm...System Restore isn't there.

    I went to Start>Programs>Accessories>System Tools.

    There's
    • Disk Cleanup
    • Disk Defragmentor
    • Maintaince Wizard
    • Scan Disk
    • Scheduled Task and
    • System Info

    But, no system restore...

I did go to System Info>Tools>System Configuration Utility and there was a tab that said Launch System Restore, but when I clicked it a flag came up that said... "Unable to launch system restore" :(

Breakout--msiexec.exe is the Windows Installer program. Here are some ideas on fixing it
    http://ask-leo.com/msiexecexe.html
    http://www.computergripes.com/nortonantivirus2004.html
Not sure which program you are referring to--the HP Printer program or msiexec.exe. If the former, it is likely you will not find the Printer program there since it apparently has not installed yet. In any event, HP puts the program in Control Panel|Add/Remove under the name of the printer, like Photosmart or Deskjet, not HP.
If not fixed yet, more info here

How to repair System Restore in WinME? Perhaps some help here

The Hewlet Packard program...Actually, the printer is working. The only problem is, it doesn't show the ink levels like it's supposed to. So, I'm guessing about 95% of the program was installed before it froze, and I had to reboot.

I'll double check the add/remove programs and make sure it's not under another name, and thanks for the links.

Since it is working, and the ink levels not showing isn't a major issue, I may leave it be. If I do get some ideas after reading the links, and get the software to uninstall and reinstall, I'll report back.

Thanks again for the help guys...
