    Hi,

I have 2 XP Pro (SP2) machines connected with a Cat5e crossover cable - both can successfully ping the other and both state they are connected at 100.0mbps.

However, the Network Setup Wizard will not run on the Host Machine? It either hangs halfway or kicks up a 'unable to complete a connection please try this manually' typically theres no indication of how to do this !! Microsoft!!

Also I cannot set ICS for my modem (USB BT Voyager 100) as this hangs the PC as well.

And, if I attempt to connect to AOL with the PC's connected AOL hangs as well - it is ok with the cable out or if I plug the cable back in after logging on??

I have tried this with both firewalls disabled (host=McAfee from AOL, client=Zone alarm) and enabled with no difference.

So I have 2 PC's connected and pinging but no network? the Wizard completes on the Client PC but no other connections show up in the 'network places' ? Host has onboard fast ethernet, the client a PCI fast ethernet.

    Any ideas?

    1. If you mean both are using the same workgroup that is called "HOMENET" then fine.
    2. If on the other hand you mean both computers are called "HOMENET" then this could well be the problem. The computer names need to be unique.
I think you mean 1, but as "obvious" settings can often be the ones most easily overlooked, I thought it worth checking that it isn't 2.

    Guys,

Almost sorted, the client had defaulted back to MSHOME !!

However - I am now networked and sharing but discovered that AOL do not support UNROUTED networks ??

So I downloaded and installed 'AnalogX proxy', I believe I have everything setup right for TCP/IP (Host is 192.168.01, Client is 192.168.0.2 both on port 1080) but if I try to connect to AOL from the Client PC it disconnects both machines from AOL ?? The Host reports that AOL was interrupted by the clients IP address and to report it to AOL if its suspicious? The Host reports an 'unable to resolve IP 192.168.0.1' error message in AOL.

I notice on the NETINFO tab in analogx that my PC's address is 169.254.65.21 ? My Host IP setting for my USB BT Voyager100 is def. 192.168.0.1 and ICS is ON.

    Any ideas?
