I cannot get internet explorer to clear the autocomplete dropdown list from the search window that is at the top beside the address window. I even right click and turn OFF the search window, but when I bring IE back up, it's turned back on. What's up with that? Anyone know how to delete the information in the drop down list on the search window??? I've tried everything!!!

    Hello twist,

Click on Help and Support on the start menu and type autocomplete in the search box. How to adjust autocomplete settings will come up and follow the instructions.

Tried all of that, didn't work. This is ridiculous. Two entries that won't go away, you cannot point to them and delete them, and the search window always turns itself back on every time you bring up IE. BILLGATES!?!?!#@!##$%*_!?

I've even tried removing IE and reinstalling, it's STILL THERE!!!

    any other suggestions?

    Hi Twist,

Neither one worked, the information is STILL in the dropdown search list
You've got some sort of system problem. The first solution should have worked, and either one of the programs I gave the links for definitely should have worked.

Have you tried in safe mode? I'm assuming that you've tried this with IE not running.

EDIT: If you haven't done so, there is one more setting to play with: IE tools > security tab > custom and scroll down to Userdata persistence and and uncheck.

In the IE tools general tab, how long is Days to keep in History set for? Play with that setting. BTW, have you cleared that?

    Regards - Charles

I have not tried anything in safe mode but just tried userdata persistence and still no go. I recently started getting popups so I think I got some spyware on my machine that is causing me problems as well. I've already moved important files accross my network and am getting ready to format the drive and reinstall my machine. Very frustrating thing to have to do to clear out a little search window!

Not being able to clear the search box is not a Windows problem. In other words, its not a case of "causing me problems as well ", the malware is the problem.

If I were you I'd try to find out first what malware you've got because you may run into it again.

If you're interested, do the on-line scans, links here: Quick Links at the top of this page > Recommended links. You'll find links to 3 AV scanners.

Look thru the sticky's at the top of the General Security Forum by Lonny Jones and post a HijackThis log to the Malware Removal section.

    Regards - Charles

twist--Not sure I know what Search bar you are talking about. Is it the one in the Address line? If so you should be able to delete by IE Tools|Internet Options|General tab|Clear History. (That is a variation on what charlesvar has already suggested.)
Or, if this is separate Search entry line, have you tried using the down arrow on your keyboard to highlight the entry not wanted and then clicking Delete?
If neither works, I agree with charlesvar that you may have malware.
The fact that http://www.igorshpak.net/ does not work suggests that is the problem. That program is extremely flexible in what you can delete--one item being "Search History ".

What is the content of the "Address field" under:
    Tools/Internet Option/General Tab

    You can try to

    Right click on start
    Select Properties
    Customize
    Clear

That should clear entries in IE the Address Bar.

Sound like you have spyware. Go to this link and download a tool called "Hijack this" http://www.tomcoyote.org/hjt/ then post results.

OK: Got it fixed with the Hijack This proggie. I still have some spyware on my machine that I need to get rid of, I'll take another look at this proggie when I get more time, but it works great!
