My XP machine cannot read any floppy cdrom or usb drive - get the message that the device is not formatted. If I boot to safe mode then the devices can be read normally. PC had some viruses which have been cleaned. Could they have removed access to these devices. How do I get read access enabled again?

    Thanks
    Pierrie

    Further info
If I boot to safe mode then I can read media in all the devices so that implies the h/w is all ok
I have browsed thru the security settings of the PC but cannot find any relevant setting locking out the current user. Have also created a new Administrator user but the symptoms are the same.
If a cd is already in the drive when Windows boots I seem to be able to read it until I eject and then re-insert it. If I look at properties for the floppy or usb drive its says file system=RAW and not FAT.

    Hello pierrie,

Are these blank or something on them? If not blank, did you write data to them at one time?

If blank, or try it with a blank, what happens when you try to format the USB and floppy: My Computer > click on device > Format.

    Regards - Charles

The usb and floppy all have valid data on them - I can read them on the same PC if I boot to Safemode. It is as if XP has its driver corrupted when doing a normal boot. If I attempt to format a floppy it almost completes before giving "format failed "
As a stated in prev post - I can even read a cd that was in the drive before XP boots up - but if I then eject and re- insert the cd it cannot be read

The other thread could possibly describe my symptoms - but unforntunately no one seems to have come up with a suitable solution

It's possible that a driver is corrupted from the former virus.
    Try this:
go to Device manager and remove the drives in question (uninstall). Then reboot & xp will detect & install the necessary drivers anew.

I suggest you run System File Checker - may not solve the problem, but won't do any harm ....

Start > Run > type in sfc /scannow note the space and have your XP CD handy. SFC will run and exit without any closing dialogue, To see which files, if any, were replaced look in Event Viewer.

    Event Viewer

Right click My Computer > Manage > Event Viewer - System and Application. Under System there should be an information entry (!) for SFC start and one for end - in between will be notification of any file replacement.

    or

Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Event Viewer

As far has I can remember I think the problem first came after I installed

But it might be also after using a program such as registry mechanic....

Take a look here under C > CD-ROM - there may be something of relevance.
