How can HDD drive letters be changed? I use a number of external USB 2.0 HDDs and a DVD burner connected to a laptop running WinXP sp2. All the drive letters changed when I booted with a data card in the digital media slot and I have found no way to get them back to their original assignments.

I've been in the Device Manager and double-clicked the appropriate disk drives which opens the USB 2.0 Storage Device USB Device Properties box that offers 5 tabbed options:

    General / Policies / Volumes / Driver / Details

None of these have a settings tab that allows for drive letter modification.

    Any suggestions?

Try diskmgmt.msc, it may work (Start>Run>diskmgmt.msc). You can change drive letters using context menu there.

    Peter,

    1. Click Start, Settings, Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Computer Management.
    2. Once Computer Management opens, click on Disk Management.
    3. Right click on the drive that you wish to change the drive letter of and follow the instructions.

    Hello Peter,

You can also change the name(s) that will display to make it easier to keep track of the various devices:

Bring the drive up and right click > properties > general tab next to the drive symbol, either add or change the name.

    Regards - Charles
