    Hello.
I've read most of the topics about slow startup, but my problem is not solved.
    I installed a software called OpenAFS http://www.openafs.org
I am using it to connect to a network drive.
The problem is after I installed it, when I turned on my computer and entered my password, it took me 2 minutes till I see my desktop. The computer was stucked saying "restoring network connections "

Then I uninstalled it because I didn't want to have that problem. Now I see my desktop after a normal time, but I can't use the internet for 2 minutes. Also on the system tray, the icon of my antivirus and other softwares don't appear immetiadelly.
I think it still has to do with internet connections because I can explore every folder on my computer just after startup except the folder "Network Connections "

I tried many ways to fix that. I used bootvis, disabled services but with no success.
I can't find any support from the software company.
Also if you can suggest an alternative software.
    Thank you for your help.

I have 3 machine on a Local Are Network connected by way router. I have the same occurrence on all machines. 1 XP pro and 2 98SE. And just because the Desktop shows up it does not mean the machine is fully ready to go.

MY LAN connections lights sit here blinking for at least 2 minutes. And if I attempt to do anything within that time I have had problems.

From my own experience I believe that is in your best interenst to DO NOTHING untill ALL of the Icons etc. appear.

One of the main causes of problems that I am finding on family machines to be is " The hurry up and get going idea. "

Hurry to get going after bootup.
Not waiting for one program to close before starting other.

And the more stuff that is loaded at startup or loaded after the longer it may take.

It's very possible that This is the cause of your slow startup.

As to alternative software, you need to give some idea of exactly what you want to do that can't be done with the native XP features. Connecting to network drives if the other machine is running windows or some sort of windows emulator like Samba on a unix machine is fairly simple and doesn't require any 3rd party stuff.

    Thanks Newt

I now know for sure that is why my Machines take so long to really get booted up.

I also think I am correct that it may not be a good idea to do anything till they get done checking.
