    When I open IE, the button that appears on my taskbar does not show the IE symbol anymore. It shows a chain instead. The chain looks like two half links connected together. It does still show the description, like "Yahoo Mail ", or "Windows BBS ".

    I ran Adaware and Norton, but found nothing.

    This just suddenly happened to me about two weeks ago. Is it a virus? How do I get rid of it? Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

    I followed the directions, but there is no IExplorer File Type in the Folder Options/File Types.
    The only File Type that I found that has the chain icon is URP:LDAP Protocol. I tried changing that to the IE Icon, but it didn't do anything.

    Is there anything else I could try?

    Look in the list for the "chain" icon.

    Steve,
    I have already looked for the chain icon. The only thing that had the chain Icon is "URL: LDAP Protocol ". I changed that Icon to the IE icon, but it did not change the symbol for IE in the taskbar. IE still shows a chain, even after rebooting.

    Now I have rechecked the File Types box and found that a few more files have the chain or half-chain. ACWFILE has two links in the chain. A few other files have half of the chain icon and half of their standard Icon showing in the Folder Types/File Options box. They are "Audio CD Playback ", "DVD Playback ", "URL LDAP Protocol ", URL News Protocol, URL:NNTP Protocol, URL:Snews Protocol, and Adobe Acrobat Catalog Index.

    This thing seems to be growing.

    Thoughts?

    What AV and anti-spyware apps are you running and have you done a cleaning with the latests ref files from them?

    A couple of general 'fix it' things you can do that may help and certainly won't hurt

    start=>run=>sfc /scannow
    start=>run=>cmd and then from the command prompt
    chkdsk /r on each of your drives. Note that any with system files will not allow the scan while the OS is loaded but you can opt to run it at next boot then reboot.
