Hi, I am trying to reinstall win xp home on my computer that has recently been diagnosed with a hijackeer. I have tried to get rid of it with noahdfear on the security forum but only with small success.

So I have decided to wax it!!!

My husband purchased windows xp home and reinstalled it on a laptop and it worked great! But we put it on my pc which is a shelf model e machine and it will go thru all the pages restart and then go right back to the setup page again. Are we doing something wrong? Is there something on the machine that won't let it do it ?

Could anyone walk me through this process?

    Thanx, Goatgirl

    Hi Goatgirl,
I don’t think it is legal to install the same windows CD on 2 computers. Also, eMachines comes with a restore disk. That should work.

Did you remove the cd after the setup file copying process is done?

What are the hardware specs on the eMachine...ie cpu/ram..etc.

Also, If you made the CDROM the first boot device and left the Windows cd in the drive during reboot, the windows cd will not understand that you have already loaded the software. It is going to try and run the install process again.

You will probably have some message pop up like
    - Boot from cd or harddrive.

Just sit tight and don't hit any keys. This is a timed message. It will eventually (5-10 seconds) boot from the harddrive. After you finish the install, remove the CD.

Later go into CMOS and change the boot process to boot from the harrdrive first.

    - Don

    btw...

XP requires you to activate the product in X days. If you are using the same CD on two machines, when you register, MS will know you installed on two machines. It might not be an issue, but just thought you should know.

If you decide not to register, the OS will stop working after 21 days...I think.

Well, I just bit the bullet and called Microsoft Support because I did buy the software I may as well use them.
The guy walked me through a million steps in the repair command window and nothing ever worked so he is saying that my harddrive is fried! It sees it but it can't access it. He said It could possibly be from a virus but something has rendered it unusable.
So I guess I will go buy another hard drive or use the one I had reserved for my digital pictures. I did have enough brains to save them all to CD and take it completely out of the machine before we started this process. So that is where we stand for now.

Thanx ya "ll for your help.

    Goatgirl :) :p

Before you write off that HD, take it out and slave it in another XP machine (think I remember you having more than one), then try formatting it in Disk Management. If successful, put it back in it's home and run setup again.

if your hard drive is still working I doubt it is really fried just a tech support that doesn't know what to tell you. If you bought the emachine and it had windows xp on it already there should be an authentication key on a sticker somewhere on the box use that key not the one that came with the cd and it will authenticate fine. Put the cd in the computer and reboot it when it is booting up at the emachine screen look for a command in the top left or right should have like a one time boot option (on dell's f12) push it and then select the cdrom drive. when it is booting up you'll get the option to delete the partion go ahead and delete it also go ahead and format it after you reformat it will reboot and boot from the cd again automatically and you should be able to just walk through.
