    Hi
I checked tonight and SpyBot S/D had an update. Updated and ran scan.

It came up with two entries.

    1 BackWeb....59 entries.
Cleaned this but could not remove 1 entry, ask to run scan on reboot, I OKed, upon cleaning this entry when windows started I got this message....
    "Runner Error
Invalid BackWeb application id 137903 "

Got this same message on 3 reboots. So I recovered it and now no error message.
"Answers that work" says to get rid of this but HP says it's needed for update checks, also on the first reboot I had to verify my McAfee subscription.
Does McAfee need this application you think?

Also, This machine came with Wild Tangent games which I got rid of on advice from people here.
Now two times SpyBot has come up with 2 entries of Wild Tangent which seems to keep coming back. one at every start up.....
    HKEY Local Machine Software/Microsoft/Java VM/ClassPath.

Can someone give me a clue on these?
    Thanks
    Geri

    Hi Geri,

A "Wild Tangent" search on this board produced 34 hits and a Google search provided many more with detailed instructions on removal. You might want to take a look at some of those. It might take a HiJack this log to get your specific problem fixed but that's above my pay grade.

    LOL
How many times I've used that at work !! :D

    Thanks Virginia
But I went throught that, All wild tangent was removed with Add/Remove and a HJT log a while back or so I thought, It was just in the last two updates from SpyBot that it showed up and then just in my registery.

I have a copy of my HJT log that I use to check against new logs, everything seems the same as before.
I will post one again and see if noahdfear or someone see's anything in it.

    Thanks
    Geri

I consider both the Backweb and Wild Tangent minor threats. The Backweb I would fix, personally. I can check for updates to software when I want, and don't want and updater doing that on it's own. Do you play any games online? Might have picked up the Wild Tangent there.

    Hi Dave
No I don't, I deleted the entry from my registry. Spybot did not find anything...But I haven't rebooted yet.

When I tried to let SpyBot fix backweb that is when I got the error message.
I will see if I can find a site on removing backweb.
If you know of any let me know OK.
    Thanks
    Geri

    Well !!
It seems that I am stuck with BackWeb until at least my McAfee subscription runs out, sometime mid-summer.
Then I will go with etrust and their EZanti-virus software.

    What I found....
From the backweb developer: Compaq, HP, McAffee, F-Secure, Western Digital, Logitech, Kodak and IBM are some of BackWeb´s customers. Each of these vendors bundles a customized BackWeb client into their products that are then shipped to their end users. These companies use the BackWeb client to distribute drivers, software updates, patches and critical information from a secure server at their site directly to their users' hard-drives.

If the backweb being used is for McAfee, no problem, and as you said, needed. If it's a Kodak, Compaq, HP, etc. software updater, you can kill the startup entry for it in HijackThis or msconfig.

    Thanks Dave
HP is another one. seeings how my OEM is HP. and I have a logitech game controller.
I looked through msconfig but was unsure which one it was. There are a few HP things in there and none have "backweb" in the name, and at least 3 are some kind of updater.
