I am trying to connect a HP Desktop running XP Pro and a Dell Laptop running 98SE using a crossover Cat5 cable.

My goal is be able to copy files back and forth.

I wasn't able to find much in the way of instructions, and now am pretty frustrated.

Can anybody help, or at least point me in the right direction?

    TIA

Your best bet is to hook them up and see if you get a link light.
If both are configured to use DHCP, they will autoconfigure themselves tothe 169.254.x.x network, and you should be able to ping each other.
Make sure they are in the same work group, and have MS Networking installed on both hosts.
Create a logon account on your XP system, and logon to both systems using that account name. You will be able to share files this way w/o problems using Workgroup level security.

    Hi Eric,
Thanks for the help. Iwas able to play with it a little before I left town.

I got a link light (don't ask me how, I tried several routes on the wizard) , but can't get the computers to see each other.

On the W98SE laptop, I can see the laptop but not the desktop in Network Neighborhood. Same situation on the desktop network places

i think what I need is the ...for dummies version of instructions.

Maybe I need to revise my profile down to beginner.

Anyway, thanks again for your help.

I found the easiest way was to shut down XP's firewall and make sure theres a Valid user account on the XP machine...no problems after that :) good luck
