Used to have one but it crashed a few years ago, now would like to set up
another. Here is what I have.

Windows XP 2.6 Gh with lan card connected to internet by DSL

Windows 98 with lan card that was part of the prior network.

I have a router from the old network. a good one. LinkSys i think.

the computers are side by side (almost) so long cables shouldnt be an issue.

I just don't know where to start.
The 98 machine has a computer name and tcp stuff seems to be still there.

Not sure how much information you need so here are some things to start with:

Both computers need to be part of the same workgroup: right-click My Computer > Properties.

    Enable File & Print Sharing

Make sure that a firewall, especially on XP, is not blocking access.

Connect both systems to the router and let them have IP addresses assigned from it. Once up and running, open command prompt and test connectivity by pinging the assigned addresses. e.g. ping 192.168.0.1

    DRD

    XP home.

One question. So I shut down the DSL until the network is up and running ?
Then how do I get the dsl modem to recognize the router (haven't done anything yet)

    Turn off pcs.
    Shut off the dsl modem.
Disconnect cable from modem to computer.
    Plug in modem.
    Connect modem to router.
    Connect pcs to router.
Turn on router. (plug in power)
    Turn on pcs.
Connect to router via browser on a pc, typ in addres bar 192.168.1.1 and login with username= (don't type a username)
    password=admin
Set up dsl via the router. Connection type = PPOE etc etc.
Set up file & print sharing on each pc if wanted.
